Hi Jo, Not sure you received my previous message. Would you be happy for me to include your entry of Dec 29 2017 about your great grandmother's stay at Northumberland House (in an upcoming show about Vivienne Haigh-Wood)? Best wishes, Donna.
Hi Jo, I am doing a multi-media project on Vivienne Eliot and Northumberland House and would really like to build in some local memories / connections into the script. Would you be happy for me to include your entry of Dec 29 2017? I'd like to refer to your great grandmother by her first name, if this is something you would you would be happy to share? More information about the show can be found at www.viviennesometimes.com. Best wishes.
With my mum and dad, I lived at 11 Woodberry Grove from 1942 until 1955 - when they demolished our house to make way for the LCC Rowley Gardens Estate.
Our garden backed onto the large beautiful and well-tended grounds of the hospital. As kids we’d sometimes look over the wooden fence and see the patients walking or being wheeled in wheelchairs around the gardens. They were always accompanied by a nurse, either male or female.
There did not seem to be any high security as we are used to today. The wooden fence was just a plain wooden garden fence about 6 feet tall. The gates in Green Lanes were always closed except when there was a vehicle leaving or entering. The pavement by the gate was very narrow and I suppose it might have been prudent to keep the gates closed when not in use. Visitors and staff would normally be on foot and use the small gate in the wall. These were the only entrances to the hospital.
We were aware that the hospital was a private one and only wealthy patients were in there.
When the hospital was closed in about 1952 we had the run of the place and it was beautiful inside, we thought it a palace compared to our very poor flat.
Regards,
Roy
