Thanks for the positive feedback on the planning applications feature. It's quite interesting going through recent applications and decisions and getting a broader picture of what's going through. I was surprised at the number of house to flat conversions I found - didn't realise there were still so many. What would be ideal in the longer-term is if Haringey could set up an RSS Feed feature on a definable location or location set - but I dream.......!
The main problem we have is that Warham is a rat run for drivers coming over from Salisbury Road wanting avoid Green Lanes. They speed across the crossroad by the post office and then shoot up Warham Road.
One solution would be to make Warham one way from Wightman so that the traffic had to go on to Green Lanes, making the Warham Road short cut less attractive. The problem with this is that it would displace the rat run to neighbouring roads so they would end up with the same problem we have.
Perhaps the only real solution is to get Green Lanes moving and the only way that can happen is by having a red route so there can be no parking or stopping. A red route was proposed a few years ago and the businesses on Green Lanes mounted a big campaign which had the idea dropped (their customers couldn't possibly walk from their cars unless they were parked right outside of the shop!).
I wonder if there is enough support from people living on the Ladder (and in the Garden Roads) to raise the issue again?
I think there would be support. I've said to PAuk that once we get the CPZ thing sorted, th etraffic should be the next thing. I think you're quite right about the displacement issue. You may recall a few years ago we got a no right turn sign put in at the bottom of Hewitt. It just displaced traffic and caused problems elsewhere. I think any solution needs to be global - ideally including the Gardens - but that's probably a hiding to nothing. The possibility of campaigns like that - including many roads was one of the main original motivations behind my starting this site - the powere of connections and collaboration. We'll need a few more on board before it can be used for that. Still, I finally got Ian of lcsp interested today - let's see if he'll bite; that could help. ALso will be an article in Advertiser & H&CE Journal nest week - may help.
I've just realised a bit of a flaw in the way Ning set this site up. If you communicate to me on your page - I don't know about it unless I check it - which is a shame because it's nice to keep th etread pf a conversation all in one place.
Michael,
Thank you so much for your encouragement. As Hugh says, I've just finished editing a longish piece on my years, from birth in 1923 to 1933, in Harringay. Predominantly in Wightman Road. It's the first 20 or so pages of a long (very long!) letter I've written to my grand- and great-grandchildren hopefully answering the questions they may wish they had asked in another decade or so, when I'm gone! I know I regretted making the same mistake with my grandparents. My piece should appear on HoL in a week or so.
Best wishes,
Arthur Astrop
Dear Michael,
Thank you for our comment following the latest excerpt from my memories. Sadly, as the heading to my witterings indicates, I left Harringay, and therefore Green Lanes, in 1933, so cannot answer your query re: Woollies and Iceland! Perhaps your question was really intended for someone else?
Best wishes,
Arthur
Glad to hear you're interested. I think the best I can do is point you to the old MPC website (it has recently been rebranded as MOPAC, but the ICV pages don't seem to have been moved yet). On this page:
towards the bottom, is person spec (which I've cut and pasted below). I think the most important is confidence - you need to be able to comfortably engage with detainees and to be able on occasion to challenge the police on findings. Training is given, and there are three monthly Panel meetings where experiences are shared and support and advice is given.
Let me know if you need any more.

Hi Michael,
Thank you for your reply,
However, no.9 Wightman Rd. was the first house next to the off licence, opp. St Pauls and is featured in some of the very early photos on the HoL site.
I lived there from about '48 for30 ish years, but now live in Somerset.
The only thing Justin Hinchcliffe is putting me off is him! I have asked the site administrator to remind him of the house rules and to back off. It still feels like snitching to the teacher but the man is a bully in my view

Paul Mckay and I were talking about the traffic on Hewitt Road recently. Is that an issue for you guys in Warham?
