Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Is there anyone here that went to St Mary’s Priory (Convent), opposite Avenue Road, when it was still a fee paying school? I was in the last Prep 4 in 1966, going on to St Angela’s at Wood Green…a school that fell far short of the standard of education and pastoral care that St Mary’s provided.

The grounds stretched all the way to the railway embankment, we had the convent garden to roam in and enormous playgrounds.

The nuns were calmly strict and very encouraging. I revisited the convent four years ago, most of the land has been built on…but the garden and cemetery were still intact.

I was there from '57 to '62. I don't remember many bad days, although some of the nuns had a fierce reputation.

Being from a big family we had free school dinners. I can remember thinking that the cook had gone mad when we were given rice with our dinner! Never having had it to accompany a savoury dish I thought they had put our pudding on the same plate....it was years before I had a Chinese or Indian meal.

I stumbled across this postcard today, sent to an address in France in 1909.
