Wow what a find... The 'infamous' Biograph at Victoria, The Regent at Stamford Hill and the ABC Woodford.. Shame no Florida, Tottenham (1725) though...
Infamous.. ? Let us just say that the Biograph didn't close because of 'losses at the ticket-office'.. Due to its nearness to Victoria Station, it was generally well used, although most of it's patrons tended to sit as far back as possible.. This link explains all..
Even the Evening Standard mourned its passing with a tongue in cheek obituary..
Yes, the News 'Kino' on Waterloo Station was the same sort of place and was especially popular with those 'doing' National Service who were on their way back to Aldershot, Salisbury (sailors on their way to Portsmouth..) who needed 'to catch up with the news' before being incarcerated again
if folks are interested in old Harringay cinemas alre look at our old cinemas album with these Curzon pics and more. Still looking for a pic of the cinemi that used to stand on the comes of Wightman and Turnpike
Hope you don't mind me adding this shot of the Florida, Tottenham.
I saw Dr Who and the Daleks here.. The school summer holiday hit of 1964.
678, High Road, Tottenham N17
Opened 1938 as the Pavilion, became Florida in 1946. Closed 15 May 1971. Last films 'Carry On Camping ' & The Riviera Touch
Oh, p.s. it was TOTtenham 1724 and not 1725 as previously mentioned.. The telephone number was always a big part of the advertising and as a very young kid, I can remember musing 'a cinema in 1724?' 'Perhaps the building is that old?' :o)
