Historically, and in Shakespeare's Wars of the Roses, yes. Over in the Language of Flowers, red roses (of course) for romantic love, white roses for purity. Back to Shakespeare - Ophelia even refers to St Valentine's Day though she's off her head when she does.
And on this auspicious day, red and white? Red we can take as a given (especially in the Tottenham constituency). But white? I give you Martin Bell, the Man in the White Suit. Truly an example to more venal politicians.
