Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

My ambition is to get a sunflower to grow in my garden.

Any tips?

Seeds are purchased...now to collect yog pots and follow all this sound advice.
OH HUGH!!!!
Doh.
:D
Yes but Annette, it's a ridiculous suggestion. It's just not practical:-

Not if the band's loud enough, surely... ?
After a disastrous first go, (heat, snow, heat, rain) me and the nipperette have had another go. Looking more hopeful

Well done! I am sorry to report that out of 20 plants I now have exactly 0 left. They all just give up and die.

Maybe summer -09..
And here is one of several sunflowers I've managed to grow this year
Sunflower #2

Thanks for all the tips!
Funny, I was thinking Sunflowers when I made my way home at 06:00 this Sunday morning.. Don't ask!
Anyway, my neighbour has been busy again with his guerrilla garden.. seen here with the sun just beginning to get high enough to light the top of the building..

But last year was obviously a better year for sunflowers.. How high is yours Liz?.. (Oh dear, that sounds very laddish.. !)

P.S. and also OT: Notice how the bollards on both sides of the road, make places for people to be able to cross the road on a fork junction, where it would be otherwise difficult to cross.
Well done Liz (and little helpers :-) We have two self-seeded ones this year, from one successful flower last year. One of this year's is twice the size of it's parent. This is on the east-facing side of a south-facing garden so plenty of sun.
This year rather than trying to grow the monster ones, I opted for a smaller variety and they seem to have liked the conditions a lot better. I've even managed a tiny one in a patch under the pear tree and there is one about to burst in the yard. They get to about 4 ft before they flower.
Do you use lots of fertilizer? I've heard that tomato grow helps a lot, although I'm no expert..
I did feed them with a bit of baby bio stuff.

I was inspired by the grower at the top of my road who uses buckets to grow them, so we planted seeds in a big washing bowl then planted them out around the garden
