Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I am finding the new yellow box junctions incredibly hard to negotiate without contravening the rules. Although they do prevent stationery traffic blocking the junction there seems to be a fundamental design flaw.

Turning right our of Burgoyne it is often impossible to see whether or not my 'exit' from the box onto the Southbound side is clear - the road might look empty, but someone might be barrelling along at 30 mph, invisible to me. Then if there are cars and particularly vans parked my side, I often can't even see whether the Northbound lane is clear for me to turn without poking out a bit into the junction.

The result is a sort of kamikaze dash which so far has not seen me either come to grief or get a ticket.

You are allowed to wait in the box if turning right out of Burgoyne, or any of the ladder roads.

Strictly, only if oncoming traffic i.e. from the Gardens road, is obstructing your right turn.  That's not very likely.

While that sounds correct for a traffic light controlled junction, I don't think it makes sense here. The purpose of these boxes on Green Lanes is to assist the entering of traffic from the ladder roads.

Reading more into it I think it's legitimate to wait in the box for a gap as long as stationary traffic in the Southbound lane is not preventing you from turning right.

The alternative is to turn left then backtrack round the Gardens, if the immediate right turn is too risky. I haven't yet been met by pitchforks.

from http://www.appealnow.com/parking-tickets/yellow-box-junctions/

"...These have criss-cross yellow lines painted on the road (see 'Road markings'). You MUST NOT enter the box until your exit road or lane is clear. However, you may enter the box and wait when you want to turn right, and are only stopped from doing so by oncoming traffic, or by other vehicles waiting to turn right."

On Endymion there are 'keep clear' boxes at the junctions with side roads. Do these function the same way or are they somewhat less strict?

a keep clear box is not legally binding, it's courteous to keep them clear, but you will not get a ticket of you stop in them.
You do in Islington. There's a camera by the big Sainsburys which, rumour has it, makes the council half of its yearly budget every week.

Anyway, the bit about cars barrelling along at 30 mph - I'm not sure I get it. Provided when you enter the box there are no cars blocking your exit then you will not be at fault if a car then appears and stops you leaving.

It's fine Maddy, it's there to help you. The people on Green Lanes can't go in, but coming down Burgogne you can! Just go into the box stop, make sure it's clear on Green Lanes coming Southbound and on you go. The box is really there only to prevent people on Green Lanes blocking your exit, I wouldn't worry about having to stop in the box coming out of the ladder roads.
