Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Wood Green kebab house wins best newcomer at the British Kebab awards

The new restaurant at 183 High Road, Wood Green, London, Kervan Gokyuzu, took top place as the best newcomer at the British Kebab awards but it looks like Harringay's kebab houses must try harder as they came away with nothing...

I presume that it is the Turkish community who organises this - they should know what's good I guess.

Of course, it might be that the restaurants around here didn't get nominated. Tends to be how awards work. Perhaps fans of Harringay kebabs need to nominate their favourites next year.

These industry awards are all phony baloney. They are set up by marketing and distribution outlets of the trade to act as a magnet for advertising.....Who do you think voted? Has anyone ever asked you what is your favourite restaurant, estate agent etc? No but they are happy to put their 'awards' in the window. I once received a 'thank you' from an estate agent who had been voted best in Haringey. Hadn't voted for them at all, they just put their client base on the forms!

I couldn't possibly comment Philip

I should mention by the way that there is a long and enthusiastic thread crowdsourcing *local* people's opinions in 2012 on the best Turkish places in Harringay.

With Flame closing and some new kids on the block is it time to revisit it?

I was thinking the other day we should organise a kebab off.

Fact is, Green Lanes is chokka with great value Turkish/Kurdish outlets. Why get a crappy kebab these days! Love the quiet professional service we get here. When I go outside 'my own neighbourhood' I am not impressed by the intrusive and amateurish service. In Green Lanes, cafe or restaurant, nobody is in your face, but also no one is avoiding eye contact!

We've been thinking of hosting an awards for the best of Harringay for a few years now. Then someone else raised the idea to me again a couple of weeks ago. Perhaps the time has come.
Sounds like a great idea.

This is Gokyuzu's new restaurant, so it's not really a newcomer. They've been going in Harringay for nigh on 15 years now, and have probably served the most consistently good Turkish food in the area in that time. They opened about six weeks after we moved into the area and we've been eating there ever since. When it comes to the quality of the meat and the size of the portions, we're generally a bit disappointed if we go anywhere else.

That's the reason that there are queues to get in most nights of the week (even before their TripAdvisor moment of glory).

Try Hala - the food is just as good, the staff are friendly and no queues, hence the more relaxed atmosphere.

I'd say 'almost as good'. We sometimes go there when we can't face the unruly hordes in Gokyuzu. It's our second most used Kebab place, and I agree that it's definitely one of the best.

There now. I like Hala.
