Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Here's 'behaviour change' with a vengeance!

A woman was fined over £900 last week for dropping a cigarette on the pavement and failing to pay her penalty notice.

Cllr Nilgun Canver, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said:

"People seem to think it's ok to drop cigarette butts in the street. Well it's not ok. It costs the council a lot of money to sweep up this litter and I hope this fine will make people think twice before throwing a butt away in future."

On Thursday the 5th of August Haringey Council Enforcement Officers spotted Kristina Djemal of 13 Charmwood Road, Enfield, throwing away a cigarette in Wood Green High Road and making no attempt to pick it up.

The officers were in the middle a litter patrol exercise with local police at the time.

Djemal was advised that dropping the cigarette was a littering offence and issued her with a fixed penalty notice of £75.

Despite reminder letters being sent, the fixed penalty notice was not paid, and the case was referred for prosecution.

Although Djemal failed to turn up at court on December 1st, Tottenham Magistrates found her guilty of littering and she was fined £525.00, with full costs of £382.00. A collection order was also granted, providing for bailiffs to visit the home to collect the money.

It's a well-known fact that all well-known facts are invariably wrong.
A headline's a headline – well Hugh if that were true then you would not have troubled to make small adjustments to a number of others' mere headlines over the years – tiny edits which of course convey significiant differences in meaning.

But this is an egregious case: the fine for dropping a cigarette butt was not £900. That fine was 8% of the overall fine which included a number of contempts.

Can I respectfully suggest you consider editing this misleading impression? What is good for the goose is good for the gander. Are you really trying to raise further the blood pressure and hasten the heart attack of the apoplectic nicotine addicts who read this?

.
You've made your point. You're now off-topic. If you'd like to pursue it, please start another post.

I accept Hugh I've made my point. But if I am "now off-topic" as you warn, by having the temerity to question the accuracy of your headline for the topic, then I think your attention needs to be drawn to other posts in this thread, concerning the financing of this website, that seem to be even further off topic (if that were possible) !

Oh Clive, off yer hi-hoss. The temerity lies not in your questioning the accuracy of a headline, rather it belongs firmly under the category of not knowing when an issue is being laboured beyond its natural life.

Loving this. Stupid litterbug. Got everything she deserved. May I suggest they camp outside one of our many betting shops and fine all the smokers? They'll make a fortune in very little time, and it might just be that little bit more pleasant to walk down Green Lanes.
What a nasty petty intolerant fascist country the UK has turned in to..
Yaaaawn!
So when your mouth eventually closes after the big yawn..
here's a little example:
Overt Surveillance
Do you know of any other western European country that has so many..?
BTW, I (very) recently met up with people from the HoL catchment area and do you want to hear what the they told me..? No course not.. you'll start yawning again..
But what always sticks in my mind after I meet up with people from London or the UK.. is how it takes them about a day or two to settle down to being a in liberal 'free' country again .. or how they are suddenly aware of what's been lost in the UK..
Sadly most of the 'loss of liberty' you are referring to happened under a Labour Government including the increase in CCTV, so maybe you've got the wrong ideological tag but who knows there may be hope yet
I truly hope so..
I almost descended into a Godwinism there :-)
