Woman fined over £900 for dropping cigarette butt
A woman was fined over £900 last week for dropping a cigarette on the pavement and failing to pay her penalty notice.
Cllr Nilgun Canver, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods,said:
"People seem to think it's ok to drop cigarette butts in the street. Well it's not ok. It costs the council a lot of money to sweep up this litter and I hope this fine will make people think twice before throwing a butt away in future."
On Thursday the 5th of August Haringey Council Enforcement Officers spotted Kristina Djemal of 13 Charmwood Road, Enfield, throwing away a cigarette in Wood Green High Road and making no attempt to pick it up.
The officers were in the middle a litter patrol exercise with local police at the time.
Djemal was advised that dropping the cigarette was a littering offence and issued her with a fixed penalty notice of £75.
Despite reminder letters being sent, the fixed penalty notice was not paid, and the case was referred for prosecution.
Although Djemal failed to turn up at court on December 1st, Tottenham Magistrates found her guilty of littering and she was fined £525.00, with full costs of £382.00. A collection order was also granted, providing for bailiffs to visit the home to collect the money.

what, nasty petty and intolerant because someone who does something they should not, that makes everyone's environment a little less pleasant gets pulled up on it. Oh yes, how horrid. Next think you know they'll start telling off pickpockets and burglars too, poor sods. They're only stealing because they want to. We should not begrudge someone else helping themselves to our belongings. How about bullying? How DARE we tell the bullies off? Poor them, they probably had horrible childhoods. Never mind the victims, eh? What are you people on???

The problem is, everyone supports this sort of 'petty intolerance' until it sweeps back and effects them personally. Of course, these self-righteous have never in their life broken a bye-law.

No, you can't throw the baby out, not in Singapore. You'd be put in prison.
Singapore regardless of it's cleanliness, wealth etc., is a severely depressing place. Not a happy place to live. Do you really want Harringay to be like that?
When I first visited in 1974 and it sounds banal now, male shoulder length hair and/or flared trousers could get you into prison.
These days it's dropping litter or picking your nose in public or the like. When last there in 2002, I realised that it's only really fascist societies that try to be 100% perfect. First the Italians, then the n+zis tried it and we all know the results.
Annette has put herself in the strange position of being, as she writes, 'a victim' of the cigarette butt throwers. I'd honestly say to her.. Get a life!
Freedom or liberty is like a pot, from which we all, in our own way, take something out and that should, in a functioning society, enable us to turn a blind to others and allow them their share.. 'taking a liberty'.
The 'British Way' always used to be - 'Live and let live'.
I wonder how much the '900 case' actually cost in time and money - and what was the result? and whether it was really worth it?
@Alan, yes I know exactly the signs you mean and agree totally about things starting off small..
..not allowed to own pets..
..not allowed to use libraries..
..only allowed to shop between 16:00 & 17:00 (when most of everything was sold out)
..not allowed to use public transport
..three strikes and you're out.. you see, it's already started in the UK too..

We are swimming in our neighbours litter. We have a right to enforce littering laws and as has already been stated, the original fine was £75 and probably only issued after a blatant bit of "f-you" littering in front of the enforcement officers.
Sorry Stephen, but we're still miles away from Singapore style fascism.

Yes, I know you are miles away from it - thank goodness. Although certain people here on HoL were advocating using Singapore methods and from my perspective you do seem to be 'on the way'.
John, the theme here was cigarette butts not litter. Society (some would say Nanny State) with it's ban on smoking everywhere forced smokers on to the streets - and then it wonders about the increase in cigarette butts to be found there.
Instead of allowing some smokers bars/pubs - there was a total ban. That's were the changes should be made - not by people in uniforms snooping around pedestrians when they should be dealing with more serious stuff. For instance Fly-tipping.
Just to clarify, I've never smoked in my life.

People graze in the street far more than was ever seen in the past as takeaway food outlets rise, doesn't mean we should accept that takeaway litter is inevitable.
Being required to smoke outside doesn't give you the right to litter by throwing your butts/ boxes on the floor. If you smoke in your house , do you cast your used dog end onto the carpet? No...you put in an ashtray or a bin. The simple answer is to use a bin, ash bin provided in most places or to get yourself a portable ashtray...my grandad, a lifelong smoker used to put his dog ends in his pocket, he would never had dreamed of throwing them on the ground. The council has a responsibility to empty bins and remove waste from your houses, as a member of society, we have a responsibility to put our rubbish in the bloody bin, be it cig butt, sweet wrapper, chicken box or Iceland receipt.
I also suspect the kind of person that litters probably sees little difference between a small piece of litter and a mattress. If you see the street as one giant trash can, you are hardly going to baulk at chucking your old bed onto it if you think it's your 'right' to throw a fag packet or butt down.
It is ridiculous to suggest that giving people small fines for littering is the slippery slope to fascism... -

I'm afraid I don't find it ridiculous.. Standing alone maybe, but the catalogue of losses of personal freedoms in the UK over the past 10-15 years is already quite long. And the hawks (often found in green 2cvs), even here on HoL, are always baying for more.
On a lighter note, perhaps someone out there should patent a 'personal mobile ashtray' because there will never be sufficient bins to satisfy Liz's demands.

@Stephen, in EVERY front garden there is a convenient (and mine is very convenient) wheelie bin. This afternoon in my front yard, gardening with my neighbour, I very nearly stuck myself on a discarded needle labelled insulin but full of the remnants of some lovely Heroin based hit. This was within a foot of my pretty big wheelie bin. Just leave it, these people are thoughtless peasants that do not deserve our sympathy.
