Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

No one can have failed to notice that cars are getting bigger. Watch any drama from the pre 2000s and you'll see that most cars back then were low to the road and could just about accommodate your Nan in the front seat. Nowadays, Nan would need a set of steps to get into many modern cars.

The problem is that, although they are not safe for other road users, people love these big cars, which are basically your living room on wheels, and are buying them in increasing numbers. Two-thirds of new car sales in the UK are now SUVs. Go to the cinema and the adverts are all about "freedom" on suspiciously empty roads. Drivers feel safe in them, their own personal tank, and at the top end, they are more conspicuous signs of wealth than the old fashioned sports car. Some of them are now electric or hybrid so there's even more of a sense that they aren't so bad. That they are more likely to cause serious injury and death to pedestrians and cyclists is not seen as a particular concern.

Moreover, London roads and its parking spaces were not designed for such behemoths.

Now the Mayor is considering a tax on them.

It's not going to be easy.

Jim Waterson from the excellent LondonCentric looks at the problems here
