Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Why does it take such a long time to upload your data into cloud - Dropbox, SugarSynch or iCloud?

The cloud storage for ordinary user have been existing for last few years and all of us can use free or commercial versions the most popular applications - Dropbox, Google Drive  or SkyDrive. It is very convenient, secure and very modern but also very slow and useless if the internet connection does not work. The cloud storage file transfer takes ages if you have 10GB of data but how to calculate how long it would take to bring my 10GB of data back when it will be necessary?

You need to know that everything depends on the speed of your internet connection and exactly speaking on upload speed of your connection. The faster upload speed the better for you. If you would like to know how long it would take for you to bring back your files look at this very handy calculator: http://techinternets.com/copy_calc?do

The cloud storage is a wonderful and modern solution but please bear in mind that your reliable memory stick with 32GB of data storage can offer you much more benefits in case of unexpected issues especially when time really matters and you need to rely on slow internet connection.

Can't beat a good old-fashioned memory stick! Until you lose it of course

Of course Abster

The memory stick will be with us for long-long time

These cloud storages work very good with small amount of data but in case of something bigger a Network Attached Storage connected to your home router works much better.

I considered uploading all my data to the cloud for back-up purposes but then I did the maths and realised it would take the best part of a year to do the upload which seemed a bit too long!

Hi Andrew

How did you do your calculations?

Quite important is to choose the correct numbers and units for calculator.

First time for data transfer I put instead of mbps - kbps and time became 1000 longer.

I converted the amount of data into bits and then applied the upload rate (with Virgin, think it's about 3Mb/s but can't quite remember). It's about 12TB which is why it would take so long.

Yes 12TB would take really long time

Could I ask what is it?

Movies, video, pictures?

Who is your the internet provider and what speed of upload can you get?
