Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Having moved to the area six months ago, to a house with a garden (from a tiny 1st floor Crouch End flat), I've been very pleasantly surprised by the range and number of garden birds visiting. We're in the Westbury Avenue area and so perhaps the concentration of parks and trees means we get a boost in the number of birds we see.

We get a lot of the usual suspects:

  • house sparrows (counted nine in the hedge this week)
  • wood pigeons (6 in the tree yesterday clattering around upside down like deranged bats trying to get the cherries)
  • blue tits and great tits
  • robins
  • blackbirds

Plus a few very pleasant surprises that I really didn't expect:

  • collared dove
  • goldfinches (not in the garden, but around the end of Whymark Avenue)
  • jay
  • great spotted woodpecker

Anyone seen other interesting or unusual species in the area?

A few Parakeets here in central Crouch End

I do love a bird discussion. I agree with you Paul. I don't live that far from you and I also see a host of birds on the trees outside my balcony. I've now attached a bird feeder to my balcony door so that I can see who's who up close. I am still waiting to get a glimpse of a parakeet. On a different rodent observtion, there is a resident lake squirrel on the rec who loves visitors especially those with food and will come as close as if you can imagine a squirrel having it's palms?paws? open and asking if you've got any food going. As you're so close you should go and see....

We have a regular squirrel who was emptying our nut dispenser about once a day (and chewing bits of it off if he couldn't get in normally).  We've gone for a squirrel-proof feeder now (one inside a cage) and he has to content himself with hoovering up the leftovers from the floor. The birds really like it -- seems that they are a lot more confident with the addition of the cage and the robins, tits and sparrows will now quite happily visit even when you're only sat 3 feet away. Our robins are especially bold.

We have squirrel proof feeders for the birds as well. Another tip to stop squirrels eating from bird feeders is to do what we did. We got the squirrels a couple of squirrel feeders. So they don't bother trying to get to the bird feeders as the squirrels lift the lid on their own squirrel feeders and take out their peanuts, which is cute to watch!

Very excited to get a gaggle of long tailed tits in the garden yesterday. Often see wrens too.

Ditto your usual suspects and a goldfinch just yesterday! Here's The Guardian's league table of feathered visitors to our gardens. There's also a nice picture of a goldfinch.

I'd never been really that interested in garden birds but this male chaffinch was sending us crazy recently with it's continual "rain call". Eventually it landed in a tree next to the house and I was able to both get a photo of him and identify his call. We also realised that his Mrs was always nearby. Our next door neighbour revealed that their nest was in a climber under their bedroom window and the continual calls were to encourage their single chick to fledge. This happened last week and all have now disappeared...

Brilliant picture. He looks like he is just back from the barber showing off his new cut. Great sideburns.

We've had blackbirds, great tits, blue tits, starlings, long tailed tits and greenfinches all in families, and wrens, collared doves, pigeons, magpies and robins are regular visitors. Once a while back we had a jay. Also goldfinches passing through regularly. We are backing onto the London Overground Line which acts as a green corridor.

I think we see more species here than my sister does in Suffolk!

once, outside Stoud Green Library a Green Woodpecker eating ants off the pavement. Large flock of wintering Blackcaps neaby. You should also see Long-tailed tits, esp in winter. Whitethroats seem very common in Alley Palley cricket ground ( summer). You should see swifts, house martins, chiffchaffs, etc  herons & cormorants overflying. There used to be nuthatches, little owls & lesser spotted wp, spotted flycatchers etc in Downhills Park when I lived there. Greenfinches seem common in Mountview area- with their distinctive call. Don't neglect the proud Mistle Thrush

We've got a wren + newly hatched chicks in the tree in our garden.  NOISY!!

A few weeks/ months ago we had a grey wagtail who kept flying into our living room window. (I assume he thought his reflection was a rival!).
