Just received on Facebook - a new artists' hotel and artistic hub in Wood Green, apparently in a building owned by Haringey Council who are 'backing' the project.

Does "backing" mean subsidising?. If so then 'God bless you Cllr Goldberg-Gates-Zuckerberg' for using your personal fortune for the good cause of giving artists a place to stay.
Because surely it can't possibly be more public money, can it? ("State Aid" is the technical term for such unfair anti-competitive practices).
And especially not after the fiasco of the JoeGo Logo and ChickenTown Cock-up, etc etc etc etc. Because of course there are vital frontline services for the most vulnerable residents which are being slashed.
ChickenTown and the council are saying it's all above board. There were grants available and they applied for them. Now whilst I despair that these grants seem to be most available to people who don't actually need them, just what is the problem? The implications are that there is some cronyism or even nepotism involved. Other than that, it looks like envy or you're chasing the wrong people.
As for "state aid" - the bloody internet and HTTP were investments paid for by the state. You can't tell in advance (yes Peter Mandelson I'm looking at you) which investments will be winners, can't we just let ChickenTown run and see if it starts a culinary revolution in Tottenham?
