Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Party politics aside, the new Clegg-Cam cabinet apparently will have only one, or possibly two women in it. Of course, when the important jobs have to be divided up between parties they are given to the men in suits.
There are 139 women MPs in this parliament, that's over a fifth and a record number - there should definitely be more in top jobs. I've been listening to the radio all morning and haven't heard a single mention of this glaring discrepancy.

I don't this is at all fair Narendra. This site talks about a lot of counsellors and I know many of them do get criticised. But this isn't because they are female, or BME - it is because people don't think that their councillors are doing a particularly good job at representing them or the area in which they live.

And its hardly fair to say that the reaction you've had shows you've touched a nerve. Any outrageous statement will get an outraged response - it doesn't mean the original statement had any validity.
I agree with Alison, this site criticizes elected citizens only on the basis of their record whilst fulfilling their duties.

Criticism is very often backed by perceived actions with empirical points, not based on sex & race, whilst the incumbent is serving. The 3 candidates you name, have all got form whilst in office, hence the criticism.

Harringay ward's councillors consist of 2 women, 1 man; of which 2 are of BME ethnicity, one from each sex.

It's all about the qualities of the candidate Narendra, and it seems you'd know all about that from when you were a councillor yourself.
As if to prove that women politicians do not have a monopoly on wisdom, the silence from the former vice-presidential candidate is remarkable.

Where is the woman Sarah Palin?

Since the massive oil spill by BP in the Gulf of Mexico, which threatens the biggest ecological disaster in US history, Californian Governator Arnie Schwarzenegger (a Republican and a man) has commendably changed his mind and has banned offshore drilling.

I'm unaware what Mrs Palin has said. It will be recalled the Alaskan bimbo's slogan was "drill, baby drill"

.
As a BME woman, I dont care who it is that runs the country, as long as they are the best people for the job! Demanding representation in terms of race, sex, sexuality, class and ability is counter productive if it means that better qualified people are overlooked. If appointing the most suitably qualified people means that we have an entire cabinet of white, public-school-oxbridge-educated men, so be it!

And Narendra - Good Lord, David Lammy is not beyond criticism just because he ticks the BME box. As a councillor, he should expect to be criticised when he is failing the people that elected him.
Before I get into this, what is " BME " ?
Yeah. Something i wondered about for a while. I think it means British Ethnic Minority. Your guess is as good as mine as to why it is not B.E.M.
BME - Black & Minority Ethnic.
Thanks Hugh. Wan't being disingenuous - just wanted to be sure what people were saying.
Sorry to get heavy handed, but to keep this thread focussed on Maddy's original topic, we've stepped in and deleted a couple of comments made in reply to Rahman's post.

(The comments were complaints about David Lammy's record on betting shops. There are plenty of other discussion for this topic. Let's not subvert conversations for the purposes of pushing our own message guys.)
So now Diane Abbott- MP for neighbouring Hackney North- has announced her candidacy for Labour leadership. Should make the theme of this thread 'Where are the Women?' topical again.
