Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Idling my time away with a 1914 Kelly's directory yesterday, amongst the drapers, grocers and butchers shops you'd expect, I was surprised to see reference to a William and Gilbert Foyle, Booksellers at 65 Grand Parade.

Surely no coincidence, so I tweeted Foyle's to ask them and they confirmed that there was a store there (they believe) but that they have no documentation on it (sadly). Nevertheless, another little bit of the exciting puzzle that is Harringay history is revealed.

65 Grand Parade is now Bairstow Eves Estate Agents

What a nice find. Did you ask them if they'd consider re-opening their shop?

Nice one Liz. Thanks for the posting. I am trying to find info about a shop called Boots, a hardware shop in Harringay when we lived there in the 50's and 60's. Other than posting on the forum, do you think the Kelly's directory would be of help? and can it be found online?

Thanks again and cheers from Roy in miserable Cornwall. :(

If you have ancestry.com access (local libraries often provide for free) it appears that they have access to the Kelly's directories.

Yes, you were right, Liz. Foyles had a store on Green Lanes from as early as 1910 to as late as 1921. These dates are just the earliest and latest references I can find. It is likely Foyles that opened on Grand Parade around 1905 and I cannot say at this point when it closed, perhaps shortly after the War. (I've added a couple of sentences to the Foyles Wikipedia entry where I've given some of the references. Not shown there is the fact that the 1921 reference was from Kelly's). The Harringay branch was one of four branches Foyles opened around London after they had established their business in Charing Cross Road.

The 1914 reference from Clegg's International Directory of the World's Book Trade 1914 shows a few other booksellers in the neighbourhood in addition to Foyles:
