A few years ago I bought a fascinating book by an academic named Haim Bresheeth. It was about the uniqueness of the Israeli army. I think he was then a Professor at SOAS - part of London University. But now retired. I vaguely remember that he may have lived in Muswell Hill.
I also remember him writing a little about his boyhood growing up in Israel. His parents were Holocaust survivors. They had lived in a former Palestinian house close to the Gaza Strip. He asked his mother about some stuff he'd found in the house; and she explained that it belonged to the people who used to live there and she was looking after it until they came back.
Like very many other Jews around the globe Prof Bresheeth has views critical of the Zionist State.
I made an online search as I was curious about what he's been writing and researching recently. And was astonished to come across a news item just under a year ago, that he'd been arrested and held overnight for mentioning a proscribed organisation.
I used to believe that in Britain it was okay for consenting adults to meet with like-minded people to share controversial views. For example, opposition to Genocide and in support of the U.N. How times change.
But please relax. I don't think the Starmeroids have banned the Green Party.
Yet.
