Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hello!

My name is Lucy, i'm a graphic designer and i'm currently doing a project which is about Local Utopia. I'm looking at Harringay (as I live here).

I was wondering if there were any improvements you would like to see in Harringay?

Or issues you think need to be addressed?

My first thoughts were to try and bring the local community together more. I've lived here for 18 months and i'm still not sure I know the people or the area well enough.

Or maybe to look at the large amount of green space that we have and how we could optimise that to bring people together...

Any thoughts or ideas you might have on the subject would be much appreciated!

Thankyou,

Lucy

If we're being utopian - I'd like places of quiet where nothing happens or is internded to happen.  No out door gyms, no play equipment, no seats, no cafes, no multi-use sports pitches - just nothing but trees and grass.  A bit like the odd spots you find on Hampstead Heath or Queens Wood where you know you're surrounded by the City but you can't hear it, feel it or see it.

Yeah i like this idea... sometimes its nice to be in the City but be surrounded only by trees and wildlife! thats why i visit Regents park a lot.

You guys need a holiday!
You don't know how right you are Sharon!
I'm feeling it too Michael!
Railway fields.

I think that what lets Harringay down the most is its appearance - dirty, shabby and uncared for. There seem to be a significant number of people who take no pride in where they live and casually throw litter on the streets, spit or graffiti buildings. The road congestion is also bad and I would prefer to see fewer parked vehicles on Green Lanes. Well there's an election coming up so I am sure lots of promises will be made....

This. Absolutely this.

The litter and flytipping is appalling. The council do not put enough resource into this problem which is needed round here more than anywhere. They are failing, badly.

The way satellite dishes and estate agents boards are allowed to blight the landscape round here is so depressing and the businesses who let it happen to their premises must be clueless.

Its just such a shame because Harringay has some great buildings.

Hi Lucy, Please come along to the next Friends of Fairland Park meeting to get involved in community events in a green space - the more the merrier! 10th March 8pm in the Salisbury. Thanks Anna

Hi Anna,

I'd love to! Thanks, Lucy

Hi Lucy. I'm curious (Sorry architectural background) to answer, but first can you tell me a bit more of your aims or intentions, and how this feeds into a graphic design project? Are you trying to identify problems to solve with a left field kind of idea? Or can you set a radical premise and see how that impacts the area...

The question is quite broad but could easily lead to answers favouring the usual gripes of the populace which you may want.

Hi, so at the moment it's a just a uni project (i'm in my final year) and we just have to think of a change we would like to see in our immediate physical environment and design an intervention that either embodies the desired change or is likely to bring it out. So i've made my personal observations but I'm also interested in other people's observations and opinions on Harringay.

Is that any clearer?
