Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Today we had a disaster. The water shut of valve (in the front garden) to our house snapped when we tried to turn it and the water would not stop flowing.

A plumber then came to fix but not an easy job :( because the water pipe is lead and deep underground.

My question is has anyone else had this problem? if so what did you do?

The plumber managed to remove the old valve but we cannot find a replacement anywhere. we cannot even find a stopper? any ideas ?

Could you get the plumber to install a valve inside the property and just repair the pipe outside? There should be a valve in the street as well - when we first moved in that was the only place we could shut the water off.

Thanks - The plumber tried to repair the valve but it was too old so he could not find the correct parts. We have ended up digging a new trench to fit a new plastic water pipe and we will install a new valve inside the house.

Had same situation, stopcock in front garden which eventually seized up. We located the pipework inside our house and then installed a stopcock which could be turned off easily.

As Maddy says there is for every property a Thames Water valve outside each property, usually under the pavement, which can be turned off though only as a last resort. It can usually be accessed by lifting the round cover in the street (perhaps you'll need a screwdriver or flat-bladed knife to lift the cover).

Fine if you're a sole owner/occupier, less so if you share the property with others.
