Delighted to see a fellow-teacher going back to the direct method of inculcation. Is it for domestic use, or have you re-opened Gradgrind Gove's Academy? Make sure we all know about the extent of your catchment area well before September. I'll ask John D if he can advise on the Scottish leather instrument, the two- or three-tongued tawse.

Thanks - this was very much an on the off-chance kind of post. By the time I get to PoundLand, the 'effin' snails will probably have taken out another bean plant or two.
