Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Not even having a clue about what 'coding' is, I'm looking for someone expert and inspirational to teach a 10 year old.  Could be 16 - 106 but must have good communication skills. £10+ p/h.  Anyone out there?

Thanks so much Pete.  Will look into the Raspberry Pi as well as 'Scratch' from MIT that Judith recommends.  Can see that, never mind my grand-son, I'm obviously going to be learning a hell of a lot about computing myself!

Thanks again!

I know someone who might be interested, but you would need to increase the price to at least £20 - £30 ph which I guess above what you'd rather pay. A cheaper option might be to speak to a local college and see if you can place some ads on their notice boards. I'm sure there will be some students who could help for the price you want.

Thanks Ben... you're right - I can't pay more than about £10 p/h but I was thinking a local student might be interested.  However, the following replies as well as Pete's re the Raspberry Pi have been very useful.  Thanks again.

If they want to try a bit of self teaching, this is what a lot of coding clubs are using. It's a drag and drop environment that helps teach the building blocks of coding.

Or try looking for a coding club, there are lots of people setting them up.

Thanks very much Judith.  Scratch looks like something I - never mind my grandson - could really learn from!  The Ted talk by ?? was very well worth watching too - now I don't have to look for where the petrol goes into my PC!

Lucy

Is your school not already teaching him/her coding? If so, try asking the school to set up a Code Club which will give him lots more training for free. If not, go to the code club website at https://www.codeclub.org.uk/ - it has lots of helpful information. Also, if you find something, please do post and let us know. I have a 9 year old boy who would be very interested in also benefitting from anything you find.

Thanks so much!  Will try with the school and let you know what luck I have.

Hi Lucy,

Would echo recommendation for Scratch.

You might want to look at Python - which is downloadable, Lightbot - also a download, is a fun puzzle-type approach.

The link here

http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/makey-makey-invention-kit-n71nr

shows Maplins info on a unit called the makey-makey, which is quite fun and for which there is plenty of online coding info.

Good luck !

Steve Wilkins

Thanks so much Steve.  Can you also recommend something for extending the hours in a day?  !

Start by doing some Hour of Code tutorials together
Then use Lightbot and Scratch.

If you have an ipad: Daisy the Dinosaur, Hopscotch, Beebots

Then introduce the free program by Microsoft called Kodu

Then get a Raspberry Pi and try Python.

Intersperse with Minecraft (offline unless supervised) for variety and fun

Enjoy. I support primary schools with IT: technical, teaching and training.

Hey also register for free for you both to go the the BETT show next week! It is the largest educational IT show in the world.

Sorry no links, but they all come up easily in google :)

Thank you so much Tim....really helpful!  You don't by any chance work with Rhodes Ave school do you?

Lucy

Hi Lucy,

You are welcome!

I don't support Rhodes actually. I have recently moved to Tottenham from Hackney and most of the schools I support are in Hackney, where I also was a teacher previously. I have recently met with a couple of schools in Haringay though who are looking at options for technical/teacher support with Computing, which is exciting.

Good luck with it all and if you get stuck or run out of ideas feel free to message me or look me up. I work at Turn IT On.

Have fun!

Tim
