Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Wallet Stolen
Two days ago my wallet was stolen in Yasir Halim just after I was paying for my things. I was distracted getting my things put away in the buggy and managing my two yr old.
There was a young man standing behind me, waiting in the long queue despite having very little to pay for (someone ahead of me with full basket, then myself) meanwhile there were two cashiers free. I thought it peculiar for him to wait 10 minutes when he could have checked out.
While my assumptions may be wrong, a word of warning especially to those out and about with young children who are easily distracted, be extra careful.

What a horrible thing to happen! I get lots of my groceries from there and shop with an enthusiastic four old helper and a baby, so I will be careful. Thanks for the warning and sorry you had a bad experience. I hope it doesn't put you off the shop though, the staff are so nice there and they sell great stuff.

Have you told the staff. I suspect they wil be mortified, and it would be good if they keep an eye out too! The women on the tills are lovely,I cannot imagine they would be too happy about this happening on their patch.

Had my whole big bag stolen once in similar circumstances... Not that I had a buggy or children or was waiting in a queue, but it's only after the theft that I really noticed that 'peculiar feeling' I had about a guy around me. He was just pretending to be busy, patiently waiting for me to not pay attention. I failed to be cautious because the place was quiet and felt safe... We must take our instinct seriously!

You know, the other thing that strikes me is that these guys are both good, but also rely on the anonymity of the crowd. To a degree it is important that we are also aware of what is happening around us to other people, ie to keep our eyes open when someone who is struggelling with kids may be taken advatage off for example and perhaps step in if we see something happening that we think is not right... I will certainly try to pay more attention in Yashar.

I had overwhelming instinct to change cashiers, but having just given birth 1.5 weeks ago and stuff already on counter, with buggy, little trolley and 2 yr old, I didn't have the energy. This is the frustrating bit, having ignored my instinct.
The staff were indeed really helpful and very genuinely apologetic. Unfortunately they don't have CCTV (even then that wouldn't necessarily lead to an arrest or resolution), and as mentioned were indeed mortified.
Do love the shop and was disappointed this had to happen in what I consider a safe space.
Great point Justin, love the suggestion of looking out for each other, this is community I want to be a part of.Thanks for the sympathies, it does help in the frustrating phaff and cost of replacing everything.

Even more sympathy considering you have so recently given birth! I can totally understand why you didn't swop tills. When shopping with little ones you just want to be as quick and efficient as possible. Its not your fault.

A few years ago I was pickpocketed... but this time I did follow my instinct and it paid off. Some guy followed me a bit too close as I boarded a train and, as there was hardly anyone around, I somehow sensed that 'peculiar feeling' so I slowly turned round to check him out. I was just staring at him when, to my surprise, he embarrassingly pulled my wallet out of his pocket and gave it back to me with a 'Sorry'! I was really shocked! Dawned on me afterwards that I had noticed him at the entrance of the station, I was real exhausted on this occasion and must have looked like a potential victim.
