Voluntary Street Clean
Hello,
I've just moved to Bruce Grove recently and notice the streets are often covered with all sorts of rubbish. Would anybody be interested in being part of a voluntary group to maybe go round once a fortnight and clean rubbish up from the local area?
I understand many people would say that individuals should be more considerate and not drop litter but I also think if the area was cleaner people would start to be more mindful and respect their streets a bit more.
There's one particular area around the railings at Bruce Grove station that I have been talking to the council about and essentially 7 perfectly pleasant, well intentioned people, have contacted me about the issue but nothing has been done because the land belongs to National Rail. Anyhow, I'm going to go down on Thursday morning next week (14th) and clean it myself (unless it's taken care of before) and it got me thinking about maybe trying to set something up on a more regular basis.
I'm talking with the council about getting refuge sacks, litter pickers and gloves to help us out as well as deciding on where to put the waste once it is collected.
Would anyone be interested?

Yes litter creates litter.
Rather than random acts of kindness, it could be a demand of all the traders, especially those that sell takeaways, that they clear the area in front of their shops, at least twice a day. It's their rubbish. This works in other countries, why not try it here?

That's a very interesting approach Pam.
Can you give some examples of countries where takeaway shops are required to clear the area in front of their businesses at least twice a day?

McDonalds claim they do this, in the UK. Haven't you noticed the complete lack of McD branded wrapping everywhere?
And, Germany and USA are the ones I have heard of.
And (topic swerve) there are loads of places where everyone clears the snow from their own bit of pavement, this has even happened within yards of N15.

My wife worked for McDonalds when it first arrived in the uk and Yes every couple of hours there was someone clearing the street at the front and at the back of the store (Golders Green)

Great idea :)
A shining example to people who moan, but wont do anything themselves.
I hope some local people in the area will come forward.

Thanks very much, and good to know you'd be up for joining in! I'm away on holiday till Thursday so will start to formulate a more concrete plan when I return, as well as getting on to the council to see how they can help us out... Will keep you posted!

Not too many volunteers so far, but I'd be willing to help. A few years ago, I, as part of the local Tottenham and Wood Green Friends of the Earth group, did a clear up of the Frome Rd embankment nr Turnpike Lane. We got litter pickers and sacks and gloves from the council (as part of a Clean Sweep initiative) and they sent some people to help too. We particularly focused on recyclable waste, mostly bottles and cans, and kept those separate so that they were recycled. FoE has also done a similar exercise in the last few years at South Tottenham station on network rail land so I'm sure I could get some FoE volunteers to help as long as the bottles and cans were kept separate to recycle. I have also had an offer from one of my local councllors in WestGreen to help if we do another recycling litter pick at Frome Rd so suggest you contact *your* councillors and get them to commit to help out at Bruce Grove too.

This is a fantastic help, thank you very much and thanks for offering to volunteer! I feel like once a few people are up for it then others might follow... I'd love to make it a regular occurrence but even if it's just a one off event for now, it would still be worth it.
And agreed about recycling, would definitely like to make sure we do that, especially since most of the waste is food and product packaging anyway. So having FoE volunteers on board would be brilliant!
I mentioned in an earlier reply that I'm away till Thursday, so when I'm back I'll start putting a more concrete plan together and will keep you posted!

great thanks, yes, have signed up for that so hopefully if things move quickly enough we'll have any equipment we need in time for the 13th!
I managed to give the bit of land behind the railings at Bruce Grove station a bit of a clean up yesterday and a guy called Marlon, who owns the record shop there said he was forced to move his shop further down as they were planning to develop the land. This was about a year or so ago and needless to say nothing has been done since, other than to let the place become a rubbish tip... So I'll be speaking to the council about what they plan to do here as well. It could be a really nice spot for a local market or something but I suspect they're waiting on a planning application from tescos... or maybe a betting shop, there's always room for more of those...

No need to speculate, Richard. There is a Bruce Grove Regeneration Stakeholder Group which is chaired by Cllr Stuart McNamara and has discussed several issues concerning this section of the High Road. People are well aware that this Network Rail owned land is often a rubbish tip.
