Dear HoL,
hello / Kon'nichiwa or こんにちは. Some people think that i am being foolhardy/mad but I want to pursue my dream of visiting Japan. I am English and know only a smattering of the Japanese language. I am 50ish, have loads of energy. My sister will accompany me. 10 years ago I got MS (multiple sclerosis) and I am now mostly on my electric wheelchair and use disabled facilities but before I get any worse I want to pursue my dream. I would really love to talk or meet up with anyone from Japan or who has visited to check some basic travel facts. If you can spare a bit of time - over a few emails or coffee maybe - to give me your recommendations/hints and tips etc., I would be very grateful. I have done a lot of internet and book searching about being a tourist in Japan already but I would like some direct feedback please. I do loads of independent travel into town for theatre and intercity for various music events so I am hoping Japanese infra-structure is similar to UK? This is my rough plan Day1 Arrrive Tokyo / Day2 Tokyo / Day3 Tokyo-Hakone / Day4 Hakone-Kyoto Day5 Kyoto / Day6 Kyoto-Mount Koya / Day7 Mount Osaka-Mount Koya Day8 return home. Thank you / Arigato /

こんにちは I'm happy to help you. Please send me a message.
Dear Geraldine,
I'm really interested to read your message because I to have MS and am planning to visit Japan! In my case though I haven't yet made any concrete plans, and unlike you, at the moment I don't use an electric wheelchair (get about with mobility scooter or taxis mostly).
Anyhow, I might be able to put you in touch with one or two people who could help, as I used to teach English and am still in touch (via Facebook) with several of my former Japanese students, most of whom are now back in Japan, and all of whom are very lovely people. Also, I don't know if you've been in touch with the Haringey MS Society group? There's a lovely woman in the group called Julia who is a Japanologist and who goes there frequently. As far as I know she doesn't use a wheelchair there but she would be a mine of information about the country. We meet on the last Sunday of every month at CUFOS, behind Ally Pally, so the next meeting will be this coming Sunday 10.30am-12.30pm.
Do let me know if you'd like me to ask my contacts in Japan if any of them could give you some advice. I was planning to contact them myself in future when I have a more concrete plan to travel there. I'd also be really interested to know how your trip goes!
All the best,
Lucy
