What a superb analysis. Have you submitted it to Ning in the form of a problem? I had pretty much given up on tags except as a means for prompting search engines. Your analysis tends to confirm me in that opinion. Does upgrading to the top Ning package give sufficient control to programatically fix the problems?

Is it also worth mentioning the use of quotes, commas, spaces, etc to create multi word tags.

Cheers - use of quotes already covered. Have added a line about use of commas.

Ning must know how shite their tagging is and have chosen not to fix it. I'm not aware of any user-fix.

I personally find the tags very useful. If you want to point your members towards material or find a reference for yourself, you'll find it invaluable.
