Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

A member has just written to me to say that HoL doesn't play very nicely with IE7. Anyone else using it? Any problems / ideas?

I recently got IE 8 and have no problems. Presumably I had IE 7 before and again, no problems but then, something about the site may have changed since my update.
John I'm glad you personally haven't experienced problems with either IE7 or IE8. It does appear that others have:

This Google search yields more than 56 million web pages of problem/s (either singular or plural) for either version of M$'s web browser. The common factor, of course, is that they run on a non-UNIX class operating system known as "Windows". Long may you continue to escape problems with your choice of browser.

The main problem as I see it, is that Internet Explorer is built more to meet proprietary needs rather than to common agreed web standards (although IE8 is an improvement in this regard). For example, if you run Acid Test 3 you can get an idea how compliant is your choice of browser. The two browsers I use rate 100% and 92%. I don't run them on DOS-Windows.
I use the Google browser and don't have any problems on the site
Do you mean Chrome? On which OS? Have you run the Acid test yet Michael?!
Running on Windows XP. Got 100/100
I've just switched to Chrome. Seems great to my non-technical eyes... No problems with HOL.
Hello, as you are talking about this, I'd be so glad if someone knew the answer to my current prob: I keep on with IE7 because it allows you to keep your Favourites list open on the left. IE8 doesn't. Do any of the others? (Youtube doesnt support IE7 any more, which is why I want to change.)
My thanks to any computer wizz out there who may know - Marian
Marian, if you are stuck for the time being using the DOS-Windows operating system, can you not download other browsers, such as Chrome, Firefox, Opera or Safari etc. and just try them out? When you say you want to change (away from IE7) this doesn't have to be irrevocable.

Is there anything on DOS-Windows that prevents you from running two browsers simultaneously (apart from memory limitations)? I frequently do just that (but on Mac OS X).

The truth is that there is no browser that is perfect in all respects: most of them have pluses and minuses, so it is not only possible to use more than one, but it makes sense to use more than one.

But there is one browser whose list of minuses is longer than most: M$ IE.
In IE 8, click "tools" then "explorer bars" then "favourites" - Favourites will stay open until you close it with the X in the Favourites window
Clive Carter and John D, thank you both very much for taking the trouble to reply. I really appreciate it.

Marian: came across the site What Browser? with basic info about browsers that might be of interest. The thinking behind it is to remind people that they have a choice about browsers. The monopolist Micro$oft, convicted of criminal anti-trust charges a few years ago, has recently been forced by the European Union to notify people of exactly this, with a ballot box in order to record a choice.

You do not have to use the Micro$oft offering which is still the most prevalent browser, despite its limitations. I would encourage you to avoid using any version of Internet Explorer (Ralph Nader's famous book springs to mind) due to its chronic security issues and consider using almost any alternative(s).
Wow Clive, thank you very much. I'll definitely check that website out. I'm cautious about changing things because when I changed to IE8 then back to IE7, everything on the computer seemed to slow down. Which may be just because it's microsoft, as you say.
Very thoughtful of you, thanks again
Marian
