Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Please inform your elderly parents, relatives and neighbours that there is a strong chance of temperatures falling below 2 degrees tonight, and make sure they have everything they need to keep warm and well.

As you get older it takes longer to warm up which can be bad for your health. The cold thickens blood and increases blood pressure, and breathing in cold air can increase the risk of chest infections.

The ideal temperature for a bedroom is 64 degrees fahrenheit / 18 degrees centigrade and 70 degrees fahrenheit / 21 degrees centigrade for a living room. Ask older people to check their thermostat or use a room thermometer to monitor temperature, and keep their bedroom windows shut on a winter's night.

Christmas is coming and that can be a terrible time for older people on their own. Let's watch out for anyone living near us we know are alone- say a friendly hello, ask if they need anything. Just making contact can help.

Thank you Ruth, I echo your sentiments entirely. Being exposed to the cold weather can have a devastating impact on the health of older people, who are particularly vulnerable to low temperatures.

As part of our Spread the Warmth campaign, Age UK Haringey invited several of its many befriended clients to put on their winter coats, hats and scarves (as John has done in the attached flyer) to help raise awareness, and to spread the warmth.

Fighting the Cold uses photographic images to highlight the need for us all to be vigilant and help protect the most vulnerable in our community.

We are thankful to our befriender, Alex Kavanagh also a professional photographer, who has very generously given up his time to take remarkable photos of befriendees in their homes around Haringey.

Fighting the Cold photographic exhibition will be held at Marcus Garvey Library, Tottenham Green Leisure Centre, I philip Lane, N15 4JA from 20 - 31 January 2015. Details will be posted on our website shortly.

The photography exhibition sounds great as of course the idea behind it- wrapping up to keep warm. Will definitely try to see for myself.

We can all spread a little warmth in our own way at this time of year. All the best to the Age UK Haringey team!
