Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Urban redevelopment gone wrong - the Wood Green/Ducketts Common development

Anybody else noticed the disaster at the North End of Duckett's Common near the tube entrance?

When the plans for the Wood Green development came in, some trendy Old Street urban redesign company proposed taking a section of Duckett's common and replacing it with a flower bed. A few members of the Friends' Group objected - and stated that it was a nice idea but given its position (people use it as a cutthrough to the tube) and the fact that it would not get enough maintenance, it was a really bad plan.

Having moved the fence, taking a section of the Common away, we are left with the a terrible looking bit of scrub land. It even looks like somebody has had a small fire on there.

Oran Ezuz (the designer) and his company East Architecture Landscape Urban Design Ltd should be a little bit embarrassed about the way it's turned out. As should Haringey Parks Services and the Council who have let it get in such a state.

I wonder if we can we do the sensible thing and move the fence back to bring this section back into the fold of Duckett's Common?

And can we have the bench seats back please instead of the stupid acorns  so two people can sit and chat ?

You'd probably feel more comfortable, if you wore a pointed red hat and green trousers..

Why not seed bomb it over winter and have some great wild flowers in spring and summer. Could look wonderful.
Meanwhile pursue shifting the wall,

Hear hear. What a mess. Please put the fence back.

While you're at it move the cafe to over by the basketball courts.

Or back to the site where the original green hut café was, ironically where this neglected garden is.

I actually think that photo flatters it. A ghastly bit of trampled useless space that is more wasteland than it is public realm. All the more astounding given the moves made to separate it from the Common. For months I assumed there was more work to be done, and that the work had perhaps stalled Is this actually the end 'product'? Grim.

Thank you for bringing this up. I will follow this up with the PArks Servie. I'll post my email here.

From the photo, it does look a complete mess. By the way, East are the architects who did the works on Green Lanes a few years ago - they were a very trendy firm! Maybe they still are.

Thanks Zena. I appreciate that.

Lewis Taylor at Parks is brilliant and does an amazing job given that the department appears over-stretched and under-resourced. Bringing this area back within Duckett's Common would cut the cost and effort of maintaining a separate flower bed which (let's face it) will never receive the attention it needs to make it look any good.

The ambition of a company like East is good. It's just a shame none of them either live in the borough or listen to the residents more!

Agreed, it looks awful. As does all the loose shingle which surrounds the tree in the middle of the picture (next to tube entrance). The shingle started coming loose the day after it was done & also now just looks neglected.

The litter in the hedges around the common seems to never get cleared & the fence desperately needs painting. If anyone from the friends of group in on here, I'm keen to help out with a clean up day!

Ever since the hedge was planted along the railings rubbish accumulates around it/under it, all the way along the path & in the park. No one seems to litter pick here. It really is foul. Also the hedge desperately needs trimming back!

The hedge was trimmed yesterday or today.

Wonderful.
