Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I just had a short phone call with Tony Kennedy, (Haringey's Group Manager Transport Policy and Projects) about progress on the Green Lanes Corridor work.

At this point the Council has contracted Halcrow, to undertake a traffic impact assessment on the options under consideration.

Currently these options are:

1. Work to change the traffic flow around Alfoxton Road, opposite the Queen's Head, as described in the  original "Duckett's Common" scheme.

2. The creation of a pedestrian crossing on Green Lanes, as described in the  original "Duckett's Common" scheme.

3. Creation of a diagonal crossing at the Salisbury Junction and re-opening the western end of St Ann's Road to two-way traffic.

4. Re-opening Harringay Road to two way traffic and associated works on Colina Road.

The budget is £1.2 - 1.3M to be spent over three years. If Option 1 were to be selected, this would use most of the funds.

The impact assessment will seek to understand how any changes will affect traffic in the local area and model possible options to relieve any negative impacts.

Tony is expecting Halcrow to report back in September and he hopes subsequently to report to the Cabinet member (Cllr Canver) and our local councillors in late November / early December. Following that a report will be made to the Green Lanes Strategy Group. If possible, the department is keen to start work early in the New Year.

It strikes me that this would be a perfect issue to bring to the new Area Forum and give local people a chance to input. I'm not suggesting that we restart the whole process, but I do feel strongly that local people should be given the chance to have a direct input on the decision and a significant influence on recommendations made.

I'm quite sure that David Browne and Nilgun Canver already have this planned. I'd welcome their input here to confirm the process for local people from here and the extent to which we can influence the final recommendation.

Yes, Nilgun, he described four options as being on the table. My understanding was that the impact assessment is being done on those options as I've listed them. It would be helpful, therefore if you could confirm whether Halcrow's brief in fact also includes other options.
Ah, the circumnavigation of David Schmitz who has campaigned for years for a pedestrian crossing at Frobisher. Well done David, I bet there are not many other lib dem councillors in Britain who have managed to get Labour councils to implement their policies.
Wishful thinking. Cllr Adamou was advocating for that well before David became a Cllr.
And the parents & children of NHP have been campaigning on and off for a decade to have this junction made safe, but nothing has been done over those 10 years. Hardly setting a good example of 'democracy' for the children is it, or being listened to about road safety, 'walking to school' campaigns ...

of course Matt. I appreciate that. Cllr. Adamou was reflecting that for years but I presume financial opportunities was not there. In my Leadership they are.

Well I'm encouraged to see that the GLSG is leaning towards the Frobisher Rd junction option for spending.

 

Not sure this junction needs anything more than designing in for a pedestrian crossing including some new paving work. Creating another junction further up to take the West Green traffic onto Green Lanes would appear to be unnecessarily expensive.

 

Surely a pedestrian crossing wouldn't take up all the £1.2 funding pot. But then we are using consultants!

Yes, it would Matt and for that reason I will support only the crossing element.
We all agree on the Frobisher Rd. crossing. All others will have to wait for the modelling  to be done, then residents will have a say about what option/s is/are possible within the budget available.

It would be useful for the impact survey to give some detail on the change to a two way scheme on St Ann's and the traffic flows from Salisbury Road, over Green Lanes and up Warham Road.  As you know, at the moment we bear the brunt of traffic trying to avoid Green Lanes by going up Warham and onto Wightman.  Will there be some element of protection for Warham in the proposals?

Currently traffic modelling includes 3 up 3 down proposal for Ladder roads. Hugh suggested this. This includes asessing the impact for Warham Rd too.
To avoid forum ping-pong, I've just called Nilgun and apparently all the original options are still on the the table. The options may or may not progress depending on budgeting and the outcome of the traffic impact assessment modelling.
In the interests of transparency, I think a little ping pong would have been good.
