Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Did anyone else have to endure the 7am alarm call emanating from the horn of the dodgy scaffolding lorry that persists in operating out of Umfreville Road this morning? The Neanderthal driver of the lorry, leant on the horn, for what must have been 10 minutes in total, trying to get someone to move a van which had been parked and was sticking out about 6 inches across the exit from the old stables halfway down the Green Lanes end of the road. It's bad enough that we have to listen to the asthmatic revving of their bloody lorry every morning at that time.

Actually I didn't think people were allowed to run light industry businesses out of residential properties or the buildings behind them on the ladder. The persistent cutting up of scaffolding poles during summer afternoons was bad enough, but this antisocial behaviour took the biscuit, and seeing as the owner/driver has now gone out of his way to alienate this particular Umfreville Road resident, who or where does one find out about such legal matters over at Haringey Council?

There seems to have been a domino effect of uncaring actions, someone parking without respecting the needs of the residents, leaving another unable to get into his property/work, leading to yourself and probably other locals being disturbed... and this becomes stressful, leads to anger and of it all blows. I can also have a huge temper but this does not help in situations such as this it just makes the situation worse. It does sound like a nightmare when your sleep is deprived and people seem to react without any care for anyone else ( I understand and have difficult issues with my neighbours)....  Contacting Haringey council for advice is definitely a good idea as it creates space between you and would perhaps let an impartial party take the lead, but my experience has shown that this does not help resolve the hurt feelings and anger at the seeming unfairness, or the sense of alienation and these will keep brewing especially if Haringey cannot help.

I may well anger you more, though I feel impelled to try and suggest ways of finding a calmer space within in which to deal with these difficult situations, mindfulness can be very helpful to find the space to breathe before taking action and this helps see the bigger picture. There is also conflict resolution courses, fantastic... they help you to be heard, when we react in anger and frustration we only draw forth the same energy most of the time as everyone seemingly in London is stressed to the nines!

Your comment about this man being a Neanderthal is coming from this space and the man in question was probably coming from the same space within himself at the time, fed up with the lack of care and thought that left him stuck. Even the poor lorry was attacked and being an asthmatic myself I felt sorry for the lorry;)

Its a crazy world that's becoming harder and harder to live in as people get more and more stressed. The more of us that try and turn the tide... take a breath and give space to situations and try to lead by example the better the community, world will become.... What I share here with you I advise myself almost daily!!

Good luck, I truly hope you find some resolution and peace soon. x

Gilly,

You sound like a very nice person, and in the Arcadian world in which ideally we would all inhabit, I feel this is very sound, thoughtful and appealing advice. You are, of course, absolutely right. Unfortunately it relies heavily on the premise that anger is bad, and calm and reason are good. I really don't know how to break this to you Gilly, but there are some misguided individuals in this world, in London, and even more more specifically, in Umfreville Road that thrive on anger. We live for it, it is our essence, our very being, it is what gets us up in the morning and what drives us through the day until finally we may rest at night.

As you so rightly point out it is the small things that can provoke the biggest reaction when it comes to anger. Being woken up at an early hour is just the tip of the ice-berg. Lavatory paper that has been attached to the holder the wrong way round with the sheets next to the wall. Television continuity announcers talking over the credits of poignant films. Not being able to speak to a human being whenever you phone a utility company/Virgin media/the bank. People who own 'devil dogs'. People. This is the reality I'm afraid Gilly.

You would also be correct in your assumption that nothing was achieved by my turning up on the scene on Thursday morning in my dressing gown with an overly generous offer to take a piece of the scaffolding that was on the back of the 'asthmatic' lorry and to ram it up... Well I shall spare your blushes Gilly... But by Christ!, it made me feel better and if I was being utterly honest with you Gilly it made the day pass in a more felicitous way for me. As for my 'Neanderthal' friend, I would assume that it might have raised his levels of testosterone and maybe set off one or two endorphins, that would have kickstarted his day too.

Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy that there are decent wholesome people like you in the world Gilly. But, Gilly I hope you can understand that as abhorrent as anger maybe to you, it is an essential part of some people's lives, I'm not suggesting it's a good thing and that angry people live longer, probably quite the opposite... the terrible inconvienient truth is, I'm afriad Gilly, we have a lot more fun!

Thanks Maggie, but whom exactly, do I grass this arsehole up to down at the council? That's what I really need to know.

The council website has all the numbers for health and safety and noise disturbance its very easy.

...And as for your comments you make me laugh.... I was once described as scary.... I am all for anger and I am not afraid to show it!.... its just used creatively it is useful and gets you what you are wanting but not when you use is to abuse people that's reptilian brain, ahem! You become a neanderthal... not very skillful.

No Gilly...you misconstue... I'm over the being woken up bit... what I need to know, is, how or indeed if, I can get him, and his business evicted from Umfreville Road, with possible punative fines that will see him having to sell the lorry, lose his house and take to living rough on the streets, after his children have been taken into care. Then fall into a downward spiral of alcohol addiction and homlessness, with a probable tragic early death. Not too much to hope for I think you'll agree... So any pointers gratefully recieved.

Cheers

I'd go with the anger! Find out about this business, do they have any right to be there. Record all the times of noise and disturbance, take photographs, and phone environmental health and keep on to them until they do something.

Anger is not something that I feel is wrong by any means however calling another a Neanderthal will not help for a peaceful community. Anger can be used constructively or it can totally destruct.  Using the momentum and passion behind constructive anger to find a resolution is great! Its just a matter of awareness...

I did not say don't take action through the council either, I think that's the way to go!

What was the lorry driver supposed to do ? Wait meekly until the owner of the other vehicle deigned to turn up and be two or three hours late at his job ?

Your anger would be more fairly directed at the driver of the van.

And 7 am is not exactly the crack of dawn.

Yes, that's exactly what he was supposed to do John. Because no reasonable, normal, human being would behave in such an antisocial manner in the middle of a quiet residential street. maybe look and see if there are signs of life in a nearby house and knock and ask if they know whose van it is. In fact there are many other courses of action that a normal person might take that were polite and considerate, John. I don't have time to list them and demonstrate how one should live and behave... So unless you've got something constructive to add to this post John. Belt up...

i agree with john... the bloke trying to work and some selfish driver was preventing that. Blame the person parked for causing the obstruction in the first place.

and buy some earplugs.

And may I also add that you are not above everyone else who uses the usual routes to solve these dilemma's namely going through the noise pollution department of Haringey council and taking it step by step, they may be able to resolve it for you Mr Lord Fontleroy, stop throwing your toys out of the pram! Who was there first by the way you or them?

Seriously if its upsetting you so much it must be a problem to your neighbours (if your still friends with them;) why don't you get a local petition together and get them to do the same, contact the council?
