Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

November 2011 is an eventful month for Route 29.

1. 20th November sees its 100th anniversary.

2. 26th November sees the last bendy bus on the route (and two weeks later with the withdrawal of the buses from Route 207, the end of the bendies in London).

The end of easy trips to central London for all of us parents with small children in buggies. Not looking forward to the long waits for a bus that has space, like on all other routes....

Thanks Boris.

The car manufacturer lobby thanks you too.

Yeah, I'll be sorry to see it go.

Yes the 29 was our only non-car way to get into town when I had both children in the phil and ted and I'll be sad to see them go. Even with only my youngest child in a small buggy I am often not allowed on normal buses - 2 buggies per bus is just not enough.

Good, now I can dispense with the padlocks on my wallet pocket.

Thanks, Boris.

it certainly is very crowded on the 29 and I guess it will be less so once it stops being a bendy, reducing the chances for pickpocketing, assuming thiefs are not willing to pay the fare, and assuming people will go upstairs instead of just staying downstairs.... Unfortunately I don't think there will be fewer pushchairs though....

It's really a major deal for people like me and it's seriously bad news. Not everybody can afford - or wants - to roam around London with a big car.

The 29 was always the crowded bus from hell, with added pickpockets (they just jump on the middle doors) I took it every day to work for years and I don't remember it being any less awful with two decks but the bendy helped me as a harassed working parent get about. Although my buggy days are past, I really appreciated the ease with which I could get on and off the bus and will be v sorry to see it go. There was a lot of rubbish talked about the danger of bendy buses but the HGV is the big killer on our roads in truth

I'd keep those padlocks on if I were you OAE. I'd say the 'Routemaster' bit at the back of the extra long bus will make it even easier for light-fingered Larry and his pickpocketing pals to get on and off the buses without detection.
The 'Routemaster' bit at the back

Unfortunately, there won't be a plastic guard on the real ones..

I hope you be happy for your children to ride on them Matt.. I've seen kids fall off RMs before now.. not a pretty sight.. especially if there's a lorry just behind

That was my first thought as well Stephen and I know you speak from long experience. The way people behave on London buses I won't be surprised if we don't get a few fatalities in the years to come.

You have to learn how to jump off them in the right direction - I fell flat on my face the first time I tried it as a youngster. But isn't there going to be a conductor on these new buses? This must be all costing a fortune, just to satisfy Boris's ego.

BTW I was pickpocketed on the 341, so it's not just the bendy buses.

9th December: last day of the bendy bus in London

9th December is also the sixth anniversary of the day Routemasters were withdrawn from regular service by Ken Livingston

Of course one could always try marrying the two ... concepts (not mayors);

More here :)

Pimp my bus. Love it. Although I worry where the cyclist is.
