Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Turnpike lane station outside space
Walking past the square outside Turnpike lane station recently a friend complained about the barrenness of the space, one tree and lots of plain concrete paving - a very uninviting space. Haringet Council have missed a trick here - at least they could make the space more interesting - maybe add some plants, think of some ideas to make it better, a place you might want to spend 10 minutes at before you take the tube.

Crossrail 2 and/or the Wood Green large-scale demolish and rebuild plan are your only hopes of some love being lavished on that corner of the borough I'd suspect.

There used to be a large lamp standard and sign on that space which was part of Holden's original design, I'm not sure when it was removed.

Thanks for replies and pic. The old photos of Wood Green are really great - would be nice to see them on display in a local exhibition.

I'm not really au fait with the layout of Turnpike Lane station, but Manor House has a nice little display of historic photos inside the station concourse itself. Easily missed when rushing through, but worth a few minutes perusal.

If you could get included in the Tottenham Regeneration, you might stand a chance. Haringey is only interested in that single project, nothing else in the Borough counts for much.
Haringey has been providing grants for small areas of green space like outside St Marys School on Hornsey. They are not widely advertised. A local Councillor should be able to tell you more about them. You may also need a residents association or similar organisation to act as sponsor.

MP David Lammy announced that he had a " vision for Turnpike Lane ".
Like most visions. it was pretty insubstantial but you could ask him.

but those acorn seats that were only recently put in should have stayed. How about some good wooden benches at least

Anytime we try to get seats installed locally, like they have over the other side of the tracks for instance, we get knocked back. We're just not trusted with them as some of us lay down on them and sleep, others sit with their mates drinking and arguing about politics.

The seats and acorns on Wood Green piazza seem to be used properly, but I did notice an improvised tent over one of them a few days ago. Maybe 'sectioned' seats are the answer.

When they first finished the area outside Turnpike Lane, there was a seat, acorn seats, another tree a bike station. However it soon turned into a place where drunks used the seat to sleep. People sitting there throwing cigarette ends, seed ends cans, bottles and so forth..it was disgusting. Since removing them the area has become cleaner. Bringing them back will only result in the same thing again. It’s better to be empty then dirty and disgusting.

I tend to agree - but thats also down to the local shops being a bit trashy - like that fried chicken shop. That side of Turnpike Lane down to the shops near Langham rd need better shops / cafes. How about a small Christmas market for example in the space, or some local musicians? A local small scale market? If you neglect a space it gets worse - thats what happened . HC have neglected the space - just putting down those acorn seats ( really nice though they were) is not enough. I find it staggering that millions can be spent on big schemes, whereas a small space that it is key to the area, and the first sight anyone visiting Turnpike lane by tube that could be improved dramatically with a small budget can be so neglected. HC should have a small projects group, specifically to deal with high impact / small projects.
