Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Did I spy a clutch of rowan trees in the pavement at the top of Warham Rd this morning? All loaded with berries - is it ok to pick them, do you think?

I googled to try and identify the trees, but as I had driven past them, I wasn't able to stop and get a really good look. It's jelly I'm after making, as it goes. It's a bit of a distance, and I didn't want to pack a ladder into the car only to find they weren't rowan trees!

Anyone know, and is it ok to pick them if they are?
I

There are a few Rowan or Mountain Ash trees on the Ladder and they are easily identifiable by their orange berries, which might be a bit mushy this time of year. Mix the berries with crab apples to make a jam.

In passing this morning, I think I noticed an orange berried tree opposite the trees I took to be rowans, which had quite different leaves. So I was concerned not to identify them just by their berries - other trees also have red or orange berries (pyracanthas, which I know is a bush, also has similar berries for example). I think the trees I saw are probably rowans, but was hoping someone in Warham or who had passed them might know for sure.

Are there any crab apple trees anywhere with fruit still? I've quite taken to this urban foraging lark.

Picked Hawthorn berries and made 'Hawthorn candy' you squeeze the juice out and dry it. It turns to a light leathery texture that tastes like wine gums

Not very pretty! But sounds very tasty...

We hold free street tree walks every two months in a different part of Haringey - it's a chance to find out more about the varous species that surround us.

No problem to gather berries within reason. Some berries are poisonous (I'm looking at Yew...) but they're rare - none of the street trees (all planted by the Council) are dangerous really.

Next walk Sat 10am South Tottenham https://www.facebook.com/events/657778270908276/ open to all - complete beginners welcome.
