Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I am in the process of buying a flat on Wightman Rd (train track side near Harringay rail) and have just come across a discussion on here about screeching train noises in the middle of the night. I was hoping some WIghtman Road residents would be able to give me an idea of how bad this is. Do you hear noises and how often? When do the noises occur and how long do they go on for? Does it keep you awake even with double glazing? Thanks for your help!

I live half way down Wightman (track side) and we are affected by this because at this point the trains come off the main track into sidings.  I don't think it is such an issue further up towards Harringay Station but I am sure other residents up that way will respond.

I have been working with First Capital Connect/Network Rail to resolve the issue - it is mainly a problem in the summer when we use the garden and isn't really such an issue once you are inside the house!

My old house used to back onto the tracks. Yes, you do occasionally get screeching noises from the night trains - the first couple of times you hear it, it's pretty disturbing - but we didn't have double glazing, and after a while we didn't even notice it and could sleep right through it.  I lived at that end of Wightman Rd for more than 3 yrs & heard it go on for about 15 mins most of the time (although it could sometimes be sporadic and go on for bursts of a long time). The noises happen from about 11pm onwards (late evening/during the night) and seems to be when they're doing maintenance work on the tracks. It's NOT every night & seems to have no pattern to it. Like with all the noise from the railway, you just don't hear it after a while, and I wouldn't worry about it too much.  Most of the time, living with a garden that backs onto the a railway is pretty peaceful, it just takes a while to adjust.  Double glazing would definitely help block out some of the sounds.  It just takes a little time to adjust to the various noises - like with anywhere you live in London :)  I really wouldn't worry about it at all.

Thank you for your responses. The flat we're buying does not have a garden and is double glazed and has felt very quiet when we've viewed it - we barely noticed the trains going by. Obviously I would expect some noise but I wanted to check that it's not so bad that it keeps you awake all night!

There is a little 'flange squeal' from trains heading in or out of the depot or sidings.  On the main line most trains are electric and so very quiet.  Even the noisy HST 125s have had new engines installed which are relatively quiet.  Considering how busy it is, the railway is remarkably unintrusive.

But for any house buyer it is caveat emptor - buyer beware; the railway has been there longer than most of the houses!
