The technology is there to stop this, the government are too scared to use it. Just look at how insurance companies use black boxes to monitor young people's driving.
Very sad. :(
Kieran I'm so sorry to hear that this has happened to beautiful little Blossom. My deepest sympathy to you and your family.
Ah that is terrible. Something does need to be done about the drivers in the area. I regularly see red lights being ignored but no one seems to do anything about it!
I am so very sorry for the loss of your beautiful Blossom.
I agree the 20 mph should be enforced, far too many drivers speeding and driving aggressively.
I also agree that barriers are needed at these sort of locations to protect those on pavements. The council recently decided to remove some near me (corner of Black Boy Lane and Cranleigh Road), luckily my local ward Councillor and RA were alerted and we persuaded them that they were very much needed on a dangerous bend in the road.
Railings aren't so great for bikes though. It was the railings outside Chestnuts Park that I was squashed against when the car swerved to avoid the dog. The biggest part of the claim was the replacement of those railings. I count myself lucky I wasn't seriously hurt.
There's a trend throughout London to remove street furniture, including railings.
The general theory is that you want to get rid of the partitions between drivers and pedestrians so that the driver is less disconnected and more careful. Speeding is more likely when the road is surrounded by railings and it's the drivers' own fiefdom. On top of that it's better for pedestrians, with more options to cross the road rather than being funnelled into a pelican crossing.
The other side is that it's much safer for cyclists. There were a number of instances of cyclists being injured or worse because they were crushed against railings by a turning vehicle.
Very sad, so sorry - I lost my dog as a teenager in the same way and it's a shocking thing to happen.
I notice nobody has laid the blame where it belongs, on that damned immigrant American grey squirrel. Are we afraid that Trump will drop a huge bomb on Downhills Park for our impertinence.
