Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Just wondered what people thought of the meeting last night? Do you think it will prove to be productive? I personally felt that we should have continued without the workshops as time was limited. I was disapointed the guy representing Haringey cycling campaign didnt get a chance to speak and neither did the two guys from Arriva. AND the fact that TFL didnt bother to attend. AND that the traders walked out.

How were the workshops? Was there time for a discussion after? Should we have another meeting?

John I completely agree about the residential street comment. Changes they have made have had an affect on some roads and it's not just a matter of more cars on the road as Cllr Haley was trying to say.

John, fancy being the one to take a leap and start an open letter on MixedInk? Or anyone else?

I really think that is a good idea. Before we go leaping in to "open letter" territory... can anyone remember any of the facts of what the council have done to our streets in the last 10 years?

I remember that when I moved to the top of the ladder in early 2001 it was only Frobisher Rd that was one way. I'm not aware if I was around for the consultation but the council began their experiment by making the roads north of Frobisher one way in the summer of 2002 (I think). I remember attending an "assembly" at St John's and it was obvious that the council were going to do it no matter what residents thought.

Should we setup a spreadsheet on Google Docs or something? I just don't think an open letter about this can do anything but start with how things were before the one way nonsense and closing off of roads. They did this, they need to be shown that we know that and then they might be motivated to do something about it.
I've been living here for just over 12 years and although my memory is a bit hazy I remember going to a public meeting where there was a fair body of opinion opposed to the one way systems on the ladder roads. Cllr Haley was at the meeting and of course it happened anyway. But does anyone recall the ill fated traffic island idea on Green Lanes? For about a year, we had an island in the middle of Green Lanes opposite the end of Umfreville Road that prevented south bound traffic from turning right into Umfreville. Cllr Haley took credit for both instigating the idea and then taking it away again.

Personally, I've always thought that having the ladder roads two way introduced an element of self regulation, as, with cars parked on both sides, you had drive carefully in case you met another vehicle or had to slow down to pass each other. Of course they just become rat runs when they're one way - that's when you get humps (and the hump!).
I was at various consultations and I thought the overwhelming majority wanted all three proposals - but as you say it was a long time a go and it's all in black and white. All I know it was on the whole far worse then than it is now, maybe not for sheer amounts of traffic but for controlling the flow, slowing it down and avoiding head on rows where the traffic would mount back up to Wightman Road and Green Lanes, all stuck shouting at each other. You didn't need telly this was high end drama at it's best.
