Driving home late last night I noticed two sets of traffic counting wires on Wightman Road between Endymion and mid-Ladder. I assume there are more further north.
I don't have any information at this stage about why the traffic is being counted again, but in the almost-as-rare-as-a-woolly-mammoth traffic study steering group meeting on 1st November there may be some explanation.

Are these things sensitive enough to detect bikes and differentiate them from other traffic? Might spend a few hours cycling back and forth over them to get the numbers up.
:)
They're on Tollington Park too. I wonder what the odds are on the council just closing off the ladder to through traffic permanently. If they can sort out Turnpike Lane it would obviously work.
I will take your bets of that happening at any size, John.
I'd asked a councillor the question as to what these wires were for. However, no answer was forthcoming. I just spoke to the wonderful Tony Casale and he confirmed to me that the wires are part of the traffic study. The objective of putting them in place again is to see if there appears to have been any more lasting effect of the Wightman closure on changing drivers' behaviour.
From cycling along the road most week days since opening I would say it was less busy first week or so but is now back to being how it was pre-closure.
Its a dangerous road to cycle along as the width, traffic volume and traffic islands in the middle leave very little room for overtaking. Many drivers especially in the morning are desperate to squeeze past you and have no patience ... only to sit in traffic at the bottom of Wightman road and Endymion road.
Couple weeks ago had a man and a lady honking his horn at my girlfriend to move out the way as they were so desperate to zoom past. When I stopped to ask them why they were honking their horn as they sat stationary in traffic on Endymion road I got the usual "F off" & "she was in my way" response.
So no I don't think drivers behavior has changed Hugh...
Yes it seems now back to how it was before closure and it looks like it's about to get worse.
Well that's the purpose of the traffic survey isn't it - to see if reality matches your perception. I'm still of the view that the traffic now is not as busy as it used to be.
