Tottenham to follow Harringay with a market of its own?
Following the establishment of Harringay's market by Jessica Vos three weeks ago, Haringey Council this week launched a consultation over the possibility of a market for Tottenham.
The Council said:
"It is widely believed that markets are excellent ways to breathe new life into an area. They bring vibrancy, fun and somewhere alternative to shop. They act as hubs for the local community and attract visitors from further afield. They also offer great opportunities for traders and entrepreneurs to exhibit and sell their produce."

And, of course, you can come to Harringay's market between 11 and 3 at North Harringay School.

I simply do not believe that they wrote this. They hate markets, they bring in 'the wrong sort of people' (ask Cllr Peacock), I despise them. How utterly contemptible, to publish this four days after they got Boris to back the demolition of the existing Tottenham market.

Considering that residents and market traders at Wards Corner have been campaigning for 10 years to stop the Council demolishing the market and surrounding small businesses, throwing hundreds of people out of their jobs and homes and have just rushed through their latest demolition plan this statement shows how out of touch and patronising Haringey Council can be.

Personally, Haringey is way behind other councils in having open-air markets, I would welcome the creation of such if they were properly managed and organised. However, the consultation deadline should be extended to early Autumn at least to ensure that local people are given a proper chance to air their views.

I was present at a consultation where Cllr Peacock said that about markets in front of many people. It just shows her train of thought. Quite negative and destructive.
Tottenham's councillors are full of hypocrisy and pay a lot of lip service. and that is why there are echos in the community to say that Tottenham is not getting the "regeneration" that it deserves.
The issues are complex and the solutions too. But the haste and waste with the identikit buildings and the externally-led solutions will eventually result in more disturbances here because they are doing it TO us and not WITH us.
As if regeneration could be imposed on people!

The council could have started to repair its battered reputation by considering a creation of a Saturday outdoor market along West Green Road. Ward's Corner could have been the place could have attracted the punters. Now such (wild) ideas may never happen because of their stubborn attitude.
