Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Tottenham Leisure Centre Advice Centre and Special Appeal for our Older Residents

I have posted this elsewhere but would like to flag up more generally....

Press Release from Haringey Council, Tuesday 9 August 2011

Haringey residents affected by the disturbances in Tottenham over the weekend are to receive support via a new Community Assistance Centre set up at Tottenham Green Leisure Centre.

Open from 1pm today, the new centre will help local people with a wide range of issues – from emergency housing for residents whose homes were damaged by the disturbances to advice from a team of social workers.

Other support available will come from the Police and voluntary groups – and there will be advice on topics such as insurance claims and legal problems.

The centre will also act as a focal point for the many offers of donations which have been made by both businesses and individuals in the community.

Council Leader Claire Kober said:

“Over the past few days, we’ve had many generous offers of support from local people and firms – while many of our own staff have been working around the clock to help find alternative accommodation for families.

“The new support centre will be somewhere where all of this help will come together under one roof.”

Whether people need help or advice – or would like to make a donation – the number to call is 020 8489 5308.

I have just been speaking with Robert Edmonds of Age UK Haringey. Clearly many older people affected some of who will be frightened and alone. Please be a good neighbour to local older people and make sure they are ok if you can. Issues around the lack of a post office and pensions, lack of access to certain places, foods etc due to unsafe conditions are evident and help may be needed. Age UK is running business as usual right now but more news from them as things develop and strategies put in place. I can act as older person point of reference and will speak to Robert again and share any news/requests.

Thanks very much for spreading this important information from the Council and the appeal from Age UK Haringey.

I can confirm, having been at the centre late this afternoon, that the advice services are up and running. Of course, as HoL members are well aware, supplies of essential goods are coming in at an impressive rate.

One point which may have been overlooked is that because of the damage to the post office, pensioners near to the White Hart Lane Stadium are having difficulty in cashing their pensions because there is now no post office which is near enough for people of limited mobility to use. Moreover, the closure of the High Road and the diversion of buses is making matters worse, at least for the time being.

Having spoken to some of the pensioners, I have alerted the Council to the problem and written to the minister in charge of the Post (Ed Davey) with a request that a temporary sub-post office be opened.

Thanks David. Yes, the issue of the PO was of particular concern and the limited access to the High Road because of structurally unsafe buildings. A temp PO would be brilliant. Will update here when I hear any more from Age UK about any special arrangements being put into place.

Terrible times but the community action and the way people pulling together here gives me hope.

Post Offices Ltd. are in discussion with the Council and other organisations with a view to finding replacement premises for the Bruce Grove Post Office. There is now widespread awareness amongst both the Council and the Ministry as to the difficulties which OAPs are having in cashing their pensions, and council officers in the regeneration and adult social care departments are working on the problem.

I am attaching a copy of POL's press release.
