This is my response to LB Haringey:

I have been to several local meetings and raised the issue of some residential side roads still having 30 limits which are unsuitable. Try these three: Haslemere Rd, Waverley Rd and Christ Church Road, N8. The pathetic excuse I have heard from our less-than-competent officers as to why these 3 roads, all very close to a junior and infant school, and why they were not included when the section of Crouch End Hill outside the school was very sensibly restricted to 20 escapes me, and it seems them.

The mess of 20 and 30 signs at the junction with Hornsey Lane, and borders on the Islington blanket scheme for all non TfL roads. This scheme is unenforceable and with an effective enforcement of the 30 limit on local main roads might stop the local testosterone-fed petrolhead whizzing past at 40 when I'm doing 25 - 30mph, to brake to less than 20 when needed.
Simple: 20 on residential side-roads, 30 on local distributor roads and bus routes, unless the section of road is passing a school or some other busy pedestrian crossing area.

This inadequate consultation seems to have been 'Canver's Last Stand' and should be consigned to the bin.  Many streets should have 20 limits, but the blanket restriction to 20 is neither practical, sensible or enforceable.

Great stuff! Residents and community groups in almost every part of the borough have been campaigning for 20mph for their areas for years...

Islington's already done it and I think Hackney is about to. The easiest thing would be to do it London-wide asap..

Be careful what you wish for. Police at the Council's Transport Forum said that 20mph limits have to be self-enforcing. Thus all roads limited to 20 mph will have speed bumps installed. Our experience is that speed bumps do not stop people exceeding 20 mph but they do shake houses.
