It works on two levels, literally. My five year old absolutely loves it and I now have a valuable tool to snoop on the illegal German Auto Parts business : )

Seriously though, this thread (when finished) should be sent to the event committee so they can appreciate the positive comments from the residents.
Yes and all those empty stalls could have been used by community groups or other businesses for free!

Feedback: Also noticed that the powers that be finally worked out at the last moment that having traffic crossing Green Lanes from Salisbury Rd wasn't going to work, so they closed it all off. The residents figured this out back in May and could therefore see a need to have activity organised outside the Salisbury Tavern. A second music stage as suggested would have been perfect.
It was a really great day and the food was pretty tasty...loved the music on the stage....and not having any traffic on Warham Road for the day was pure bliss!!
An excellent festival, which all three generations of my family thoroughly enjoyed - allowing for a few quibbles and asides.

Next year, can Harringayonline be more wHOLeheartedly involved throughout - with a real presence on the ground and in the otherwise excellent programme ?
It was fantastic to have a pedestrianised Green Lanes, even if just for a day.
I do think that the word 'food' should be dropped from the event name though - there were not enough great food stalls and as others have said, some local businesses didn't make the most of the stalls. One was covered entirely with stacks of leaflets. Another low point was a stall with loads of random stock from the back of the shop eg Pot Noodles (at a food festival!) with a sign saying 'We have hot water for the Pot Noodle'.
I hope it becomes an annual event and I'm sure it would be even more successful next time.
Noooo! That is really funny (pot noodles), as well as rather sad.
Politicians aside, this was a real community event. Everyone seemed to be out, reclaiming our high street from traffic for fun, frivolity, meeting our neighbours and socialising in our local pubs and restaurants. I am extremely grateful to the neighbourhood management team and the local reps who put the hours in to give us this chance and I would urge them to make this an annual event.

I do sense that with the praise however there are lots of ideas for improvement so perhaps a good idea would be for me to start a thread in the festival group that allows people to note ideas and suggestions for next year and we will find a way to feed this back to the relevant people.
A thread to list ideas/suggestions for 2010 here
The Food Festival was a great success judging by the attendance at the restaurants after the event. It seemed to me to extend beyond the community and put Harringay on the food map of London. 20 of my family's friends came from South London and stayed to eat at chosen restaurants afterwards and many people wandering to and from the tube stations did not live in the area. Some acquaintances from Islington were quite impressed with the quality of the food, they may return. The event yesterday was in competition with Open London Day so they chose the right deal.

One problem which did occur was when my granddaughter who is a newly qualified nurse commented on the fact that some vendors were serving food and taking money without washing their hands or using antiseptic gel, and some of the cakes had been out on open tables for rather a long time and easily contaminated by dust and people speaking over them. She may be a bit too fussy?

Street cleaners could have been a bit more in evidence as there were a few untrained dogs and owners about.
You were right Margaret about the restaurants (and pubs) afterwards. We popped into the Salisbury and Flame and they were both doing brisk business. I have eaten in restaurants around here all weekend and the food has been great...with particular praise for The Village which I'd hoped would be serving food on the street. The 'ker ching' effect for businesses after such events must be great an another reason to promote it as an annual event.
Margaret, your granddaughter's comments are very helpful. Can I suggest that anyone who has any suggestions or concerns from the Festival - about food-handling or similar - should pass them on to Haringey Enforcement Service:
enforcement@haringey.gov.uk

And please don't be reluctant in case this is seen as negative. During the Festival there were people from the Council checking on food-handling, separation of waste from food-on-sale etc. Haringey staff were also keeping an eye on issues such as licencing; street-trading; safety; noise etc. If they missed problems they want to know! So do the organisers.

The system - which operates for all such events - is that Council staff get together as early as possible with the organisers to discuss and agree how the the event will be managed.

As well as being present during the day, staff and organisers will meet soon afterwards for a de-briefing. They'll discuss things which went wrong - as well as those which went right! The key is to learn how to solve problems for the future. I was told that most events held for the first time are likely to generate some problems. Organisers and participants may be new to the challenge. But learning and improvement is rapid.

I heard that Haringey staff who were there also had a great time. And that the first-aiders had nothing more serious to deal with than a couple of grazed knees.
Alan, what would you suggest would be a good way to pass on all the feedback, comments and suggestions that we are gathering? I feel we should perhaps have a more face to face feedback session with the local organisers. Some thoughts so far were, via residents groups, at Area Assembly. Also, I'm not sure if the council allow their employees to come directly here now and read what people have to say. Any thoughts?
