Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The Camden New Journal reports that Andy Burnham has put a stop to the plans to close the Whittington A&E and maternity units. Full story here

The Defend the Whittington Coalition said on Twitter earlier today:

On behalf of @dwhcoalition thanks 2 ALL who campaigned 4 Whittington A&E, regardless of your political allegiance. We did good! Dave P. :)

Great news.
Fantastic!!!

And thank you to Peter for highlighting the issue tirelessly here on HOL. Good campaign.

(of course things can still change after the election with a new party in office)
I'm very happy about this, cos I was born there about 6 months ago and if it wasn't for all those nice nurses and doctors I might not 'ave been born at all. My mum is very thankful to the Whittington too, but she didn't like the food much..
Good news indeed. Thanks to the Coalition in their thousands and to Peter here in particular.

My Dear Friend Lammy has just asked me to join him at the Whittington rally at noon - but I'm sure he can milk a photo op without my presence.
Thanks so much to the Coalition and Peter on here for keeping us all updated, and thank you to everyone of the 5000 who marched a few months ago in protest at the silly proposal.

Power to the people folks!!!!
There is indeed now a new government which promises (still) "Cameron and Lansley have promised not a single A&E or maternit....
However what they do propose is to reorganise the way the money in the NHS (Public Health Service??) will be distributed via GPs (General practitioners not satnavs).

I'm not so sure that this will work. I wonder what we the public should do about it? Clealry marching up and down Holloway Road (the only tactic that http://dwhc.org.uk/ seemed to ahve is not enough. I wonder how we can particiapte in this set of changes given that empowering local people is a sort of mantra for the coalition.
I think you are being rather unfair about the DWHC's campaign being reliant solely on a demonstration up the Holloway Road.

An intense amount of political lobbying went on, with many letters written to ministers, MPs, health executives, members of health trusts etc.

It was a true coalition of many political parties, trades unions, the 5 councils, non-aligned groups and residents groups and don't forget the doctors, consultants, nurses and hospital workers who were also members of the coalition.

At least 3 packed public meetings were organised by Jeremy Corbyn & Lynne Featherstone

Jeremy Corby arranged an early day motion debate, whilst Lynne Featherstone promoted a debate on London hospitals at Westminster Hall.

Thousands upon thousands of signatures were amassed on hard copy & e-petitions.

I think you must also recognise the tremendous amount of work done by "Defend Haringey's Health Services."

The demonstration was instrumental in bringing the issue national prominence, with coverage on the day and after by the BBC, ITV, Sky, Channel 4 and radio as well, which continued after the march had long finished.

If you are concerned about what the future holds, and how you might influence it, you could do worse than go along to one of the regular meetings that DWHC, and DHHS hold, and register with their mailing lists. The struggle and fight to keep the NHS free for everybody continues, albeit without so much fanfare, until the next major controversy/proposal/consultation crops up.
The dwh coalition are tweeting pics from today's rally here
Fantastic news, what a relief.

Thanks to everyone on HoL for their pressure & help in marching & leafleting & collecting & signing the petitions.

I'd better go out and tell the shopkeepers on Green Lanes that we can take the posters down now.
Well done to Peter and everyone else involved - fantastic campaigning!
Here I am raining on the parade. That A&E is overused by people who are not registered with a GP and just want paracetamol.

A "tweet" from Dr Ben Goldacre earlier today:
"After a major carcrash, I wld pay $1m to be taken to a national trauma centre, not some random A&E: srsly"

He links to this.
"Here I am raining on the parade". Unlike you John : )
There is also the 24hr walk in clinic for lesser emergencies at the Whit.
