Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Popped down to tour The Switch House at Tate Modern today. A great experience. The Tate Modern has hit 1 million visitors in the past month since the new wing opened. However, between 11:30am - 2:30pm it didn't feel too crowded.

TIP; go straight to floor 10 for the viewing balcony which goes right around the building where there's plenty of space for all to enjoy the excellent views. Then descend down the stairs floor by floor towards the exhibition area starting on floor 4.

I didn't use the restaurant on floor 9 or any cappuccino bar within The Switch House but ended up in the excellent Leon restaurant opposite the gallery.

TV screens above; Multi media was more prevalent in The Switch House galleries, particularly within the large Tanks basement area, which was very cool.

Taken from the new bridge.

World education on one shelf; Tate Modern shop. Problems solved.

Hi Matt, I have just had a great day (3-9pm) there too; first, I saw the amazing Tree by Ai Weiwei, then floor 3 to the Georgia O'Keeffe exhibition, then up to floor 4 where the second internal bridge goes across to Switch House to see some of the free exhibitions. then floor 10 to walk around the viewing balcony which was beautifully designed, finally the restaurant on floor 9 for a light meal (just starters and i shared desert) which was all good. it really is a great new addition to the Tate Modern. Still much more to see and do there next time . . .

Great to hear Geraldine. I'll certainly be popping back too. I had largely stopped going to the Tate Modern before now.

I was disappointed when I visited. The exterior is fantastic but the interior seems to bear no relationship to it. When you're inside the gallery spaces they feel like they could be anywhere. The room with the Lousie Bourgoise sculptures looked like someone had just plonked the works down with little thought.

That's true regarding the relationship between the exterior & interior, except obviously the balcony area where they make good use of it's weird shape. Not sure they could have done things differently because they don't want to play with too much natural light. Same in the main areas of Tate Modern galleries, except the Turbine Hall. But one is meant to be concentrating on the art rather than the building :)

True (about concentrating on the art) but that was one of the problems I had with it. The circulation spaces are illogical and some of the actual galleries are tiny rooms off other rooms. I ended up looking at where I was going as much as looking at the works on display.

Yes it was a little confusing re the small spaces. I think it's done to make visitors explore/discover ... a bit like shoppers in a supermarket (when the stock gets moved)   :)

Agree..... took some of the same pics..... the cous cous 'city' well worth seeing, too. All these multimedia items challenge what some may view as art. I can just hear my now deceased uncle asking 'But is it art?'.... Definitely...
