Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

If you are on Tottenham High Road on Tuesday 6th November from 10.30am, don’t do a double take …. you will be seeing two Roman Ermine Street guards accompanying a group of young people from Tottenham in a ‘brake’ led by shire horses proceeding along the High Road ….

This is part of the Stories of the World programme, a project led by Bruce Castle Museum working with the Museum of London.

Young people from Tottenham will be re-tracing the steps of Roman soldiers who would have once marched along this old Roman route of Ermine Street into and out of Londinium. (The Roman road of Ermine Street was - more or less - where Tottenham High Road is now).

They will be following the route from Tottenham into the City of London, to reach their destination of the Museum of London, visiting the Our Londinium 2012 exhibition.

The Romans will be leaving Bruce Castle at 10.30am and will proceed onto the High Road, reaching it about 10 minutes later. If you are out and about, do give them a wave.

This is a one-off …. And the last event of this Cultural Olympiad programme.

What have they ever done for us ?

A little picture and write up from LBH website:

Shire horses took to Tottenham High Road this week transporting Roman soldiers in a high seat brake carriage to the Museum of London.

The soldiers were participants in Bruce Castle Museum’s project 'Man! I Feel like a Roman'. They travelled with other passengers along the High Road which follows the old Roman road of Ermine Street, leading into 'Londinium' - the Roman name for the City of London.

Young Archaeologist Tom McKeown, who is taking part in the museum's project, said:

“It was a great experience to travel into London at the same speed the Romans did 2000 years ago”.

The project focuses on adornment and forms part of the continuing Cultural Olympiad.

The 'Man! I Feel like a Roman' exhibition can be seen at Bruce Castle Museum from early in the new year until the Spring. For more information tel: 020 8808 8772
