Hi Clive,
I too read Aditya Chakrabortty's Guardian article on housing and saw the photo of Steve Reed in his idiotic Red Maga-like hat. This clowning Minister was apparently handing these hats out at the Labour conference. Do these Labour bigshots actually believe they can out-Maga Trump and Farage?
I know there are new flats built. How many? I don't know.
Clive, Why don't you and I write to Council Leader Peray Ahmet asking her how many new affordable homes Haringey has built and which have tenants in them. (No obfuscation about spades-in-the ground.)Also there seem to be blocks of flats unfinished for many many months. Could she please supply information about these?

Alan, it's an idea. One would need to distinguish, as you suggest, between housing starts and dwellings actually occupied.
Though I'm not sure that the Leader could find time to respond to such questions (N.B. The No.1 top distraction into which time, money and attention is poured).
Is New Labour more like Continuity Conservatives?
Or, to the right of One Nation Conservatives?

Alan - They should also be asked about social rent homes. "Affordable" can be up to 80% of market rent, so it is social rent homes that are really needed. The new government's delivery on new homes is woefully short of what they promised. I too saw reports of Steve Reed and his hats and other promo merchandise, and I thought it was a disgrace. No British government minister (especially a Labour one) should be acting like this.

Yes.
I was surprised that the first New Labour Government—when they had the chance—did not end the previous Conservative Government's Right to Buy (council housing). Was not one of the main effects of this insidious policy, to reduce the amount of social rent homes available?
As for the Secretary of State for Housing: the second New Labour Government is unlikely to win support in the UK by aping or appeasing Trump and his MAGA movement: and they may not stem losses to Reform in their effort.

The most notable local and consequential Right to Buy, was the curious Option to buy the freehold of Haringey Council's headquarters (Alexandra House).
A shell company—formed by a remarkably well informed property developer—managed to acquire and then sell on that Right to Buy to the council (that's us) for £6,000,000.
The council (us again) under the then-leadership of Joseph Ejiofor, paid a total of £22,600,000 for a building later required by the external auditor to be recorded at a value of £10,100,000.
