This week's planning applications list shows that the march of the double-shop 'Turkish' is continuing along Green Lanes. This time Gaziantep are spreading next door and into Wilson's Laundmatic.

How many Turkish restaurants can possibly survive on Green Lanes? It gets more and more boring. Multicultural Green Lanes? Nah, Turkish Green Lanes.

I'm more concerned about the loss of the laundrette. With so many flats and HMOs it's really well used. If it goes it will only leave the one a few doors down from the post office.

It's a nice period piece too. Mind you, so is the metal sign hanging thing above Gaziantep.
I don't see the spread of Turkish food as negative, though - it's one of the few things this area does to very high quality. I'm always rather surprised that the council doesn't start marketing Harringay as a specialist food quarter (with the festival and everything). After all, people come here from all over London for it.

When I first moved to the area there was a proper Chinese restaurant ( Yungs, I think it was called), two good Indians and -briefly- a Malaysian restaurant alongside the (not terribly good) Greek ones.
I wouldn't want the double-fronters, successful as they are, to drive out the smaller operations.

My daughter is married to a Turkish Chef and this is why we live in this area. Harringay Green Lanes is well known in London for excellent Turkish restaurants and many overseas visitors pop in when in London.

I'm a fan of that Laundamatic, both of its look and usefulness (we'd have been stuck, when we first moved in, without them). Its loss will be a great shame.
That corner will no longer have a kind of 'local landmark' status.

I agree SarahC. The fact that the Turkish community has spent decades investing in the area for it to develop further isn't a bad thing. It makes a unique offer for the area.
It would be good to see more good restaurants of a different sort tho, as Hugh says. I wonder if its easy for businesses to come to the area and set up.

Years ago a local woman started a cafe on GLs which served up burgers, pastas etc. She was doing well. Went there a few times and really enjoyed having something different in the area. This was probably back in the 1990s. Business lasted less than two years before it just wasn't there anymore. I heard later that she had refused to pay protection money but was constantly harassed. Still, Muna refused to as well and she managed to stay open for about 5 yrs. But Muna is a very strong and independant person.
