Paying a visit to Stroud Green and Harringay Library, I had a little look at the mahonia to see if there were any insects I could bother. At this time of year, there's not a lot to see but mahonia, beloved of municipal gardeners everywhere, is an excellent rich food and therefore worth peering at when you pass.
I was rewarded with my first bumblebee of the year.
I think this is probably a buff-tailed queen, newly emerged and feeding herself up in order to lay eggs. She is very early to emerge though!
