All that metal must have a significant scrap metal value. I'm sure it will be sold and re-used in some way. Pretty sure there are EU regulations that insist on it....

It saddens me to see these images! Gasholder No 1 at Hornsey was built in 1892 by Samuel Cutler. It is a structure of major historical significance, being the earliest example of a structure using geodesic principles – the same as used in the London Gherkin of 2004. I have been involved with others for the past ten years in trying to get this structure listed and to be reused as part of an attractive contemporary development.
Failure to protect this structure is partly due to Haringey Council, who removed it from the ‘local list’ of protected buildings in 2006, so as to facilitate the development of Haringey Heartlands, the high-density housing development that is due for this site. Successive applications to English Heritage and now Historic England have failed to achieve listed status – the most recent refusal being only three weeks ago, just before the cutting torches went to work.
This is a sorry story of institutional vandalism of heritage and a negation of responsibility by Historic England, who are supposed to be custodians of our heritage. I am writing a short history of this story, which will show how we have all be short-changed by institutions that should have served us better. I will post it on this forum within the next few days.
Interestingly, Cutler’s geodesic structures were exported and also built by him elsewhere in Europe and the rest of the world. It would be ironic if for example, one were to be preserved, because of its innovative nature, in say Rome!

The attached doc is a summary story of the attempt to get the gasholder listed and why it failed. This is written in the form of a message to colleagues who have been concerned about development on the gasworks site and the gasholder. Not a happy story!

I agree and feel sad about it. I wish Haringey had more vision and kept the older gasholder.

Damn, they've sold Haringey's Cutlery for scrap.
Should we take to the streets, or at least to HOL, to defend those other eyesores on the Wightman skyline - mobile phone masts, Sky dishes, prismatically tin-hatted churches ?
