Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The Christmas Express - steam train from Kings X going through Finsbury Park

Thanks to the Harringay Steam Train Watchers group for letting us know about the above as it chuffed its way from Kings X, via Finsbury Park to Lincoln this weekend.

Those on the bridge with us had a brief chat about fossil fuels but we decided this was heritage fossil fuels and it was ok - lols.

If you get the chance next time, stand on the bridge that heads from Finsbury Park to Oxford Road and stand on the Stroud Green end - that's where you get the best smoke filled fun!

James, there's another this Thursday but passing through Harringay Green Lanes (1020ish) and Crouch Hill (1025ish) stations. Less convenient than a Saturday morning.

Ah, fossil fuels and CO2 emissions. There were fears that the Environment Bill going through Parliament would be a threat to steam operations (including preserved lines), but the Government has assured the Heritage Railway Association that they will not be affected by it according to the latest Railway Magazine. A figure quoted is that steam locomotives account for just 0.023% of total emissions!

Due to pass through Gospel Oak and Camden on a different line on its return journey, but I didn’t hear anything (I was in Kentish Town, close to the line, in the evening), so wonder if the return routing changed at short notice or if there was an engine problem. Alternatively, I might just have missed it, of course!

It is almost certain that the steam loco (44871) came off the train in the Southhall area where the London steam shed is located and the remainder of the journey to Southend was hauled by a 1960s diesel locomotive.

Two possibly (v) stupid questions:

1. Is it possible to buy a ticket for the actual journey this weekend (day?)?

2. Circa, what time will the train pass Finsbury Park, Oxford rd bridge this weekend (day?)?

Kind regards,

Camilla

As far as I know, the only remaining trains Steam Dreams are operating before Christmas are half-day circular morning and evening "Santa Steam Express" trains from Victoria with 61306 'Mayflower' on 13/14/20/22 December. Tickets are from £49.99, see

https://www.steamdreams.co.uk/santasteamexpresstours

Camilla, sorry to disappoint but that train ran last Saturday, the 5th.

1.  You would usually book a ticket online/by phone from the tour company a few days before travelling, though you might be able to turn up at Kings Cross on the day and talk to the company's staff - this is not a National Rail service, but a private tour company.

2. These don't run every week, and the next two steam services to pass under the Oxford Road footbridge (where James Law saw it) do so very early, at 0720 and 0640, so that's twilight at best. If you join HoL's 'Steam Train Watchers' group you'll see updates, times and locations of forthcoming (and more conveniently timed) trips there.
