Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I've been trying unsuccessfully to get hold of a DVD or even a VHS version of John McGrath's play: The Cheviot, the Stag & the Black Black Oil, by the 7:84 Theatre Company. It was shown on BBC in 1974.

Anyone got an old VHS copy tucked away somewhere? Thanks.

And it has taken you this long to get round to trying to watch it again Alan???

Funny to hear Cameron referencing the Clearances in Holyrood today - the issues haven't really gone away after all these years!  Sorry I can't help with a video although I'm sure the script must still be in print as it's taught in Scottish schools.

Hi Alan,

If you haven't had any luck yet, you could post a plea on the listserv of the Standing Committee of University Drama Departments (SCUDD--yes, I know).  You can get there via the main SCUDD website (the exact URL for which escapes me at the moment).  Cheviot is pretty commonly taught on undergraduate Drama programmes in the UK, so someone might have a copy they'd be willing to share, especially since BBC Alba recently broadcast it.

Thanks for that helpful suggestion, M. It looks like I can get a copy of the script fairly cheaply , but I'm still hoping to watch the play as I missed the BBC Alba version.

Eona, even the Spectator referenced the clearances. Although that particular threatened clearance was not the Clan Cameron but Mr Cummings of Redbridge.
